As my father put it, they looked like they were from an Oliver Stone movie...

What did you guys think about Boise St and Virginia techs uniforms last night? U-G-L-Y West Virginia's were better than Boise St. I always thought that Boise State's uniforms were the sharpest around, can't say that anymore. I did like the flat black on WV's helmets though.

I really like old school looking uniforms. So my opinion is kind of bias. I thought the uniforms had to much going on and looked ugly. From a players standpoint, I can see where Nike is getting away with making all of these ridiculous uniforms.
Out of all of the stuff going on with the uniforms last night. I really like VT's flat black helmets. Looked pretty cool considering I hate how most helmets are going with the glitter stuff in the paint.

i realize i'm in the minority, but I love the ProCombat looks. why not embellish a (team) look based on the theme (mascot)? Why is solid primary, solid secondary colors so revered? blah... i realize this is simply a marketing thing for Nike sales ("hey, heres something else you fans need to buy") but whats wrong with creating a deeper identity/branding to? I especially like TCU's duds during the Fiesta Bowl and the gun-metal matte helmets **shoot, I even liked the Iowa Hawkeyes Reebok 'feather' version in 1994 that they now simply use as practice gear

What are Va Techs actual colors?
Aren't they a type of eggplant purple and orange?

Va Tech's colors are maroon and burnt orange--the same shade as the Chicago Bears' "C".
I thought both teams looked awful last night. Va Tech's numbers looked kinda cool in the light, but overall both teams looked like they belonged in the XFL or the World League. Nasty!
I prefer classy, old school uniforms. Whatever happened to dark jerseys/light pants for home and light jerseys/whatever pants for the road? Why does every team, including HS teams, feel the need to wear black, gray, or dark blue when it's not even part of the school colors!?!?
But then, I'm still mad that the University of Tennessee outlines the orange numbers and names on their white road jerseys with black trim so they're easier to read. Let the fans and reporters strain their eyes, I say! If it was good enough for Reggie White and Peyton Manning, it's good enough for... whoever we've got now.

I think the Boise state unis are slick. These look better than the old ones. TCU uni looks awesome as well. The matte finish on the VT helmet was cool to. I not a Nike fan but........ I like the unis

Call me crazy, but I think a team's uniforms should be consistent with the colors of the team and the school that they represent. Weird, huh.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes old school uniforms. I don't mind new detailed uniforms, but shouldn't they dawn their school colors? Everyone today seems to want to wear black. I honestly felt angry when I saw the VT uniforms. The detail was cool, but when did black all of a sudden become their primary color.
I'll back this though up with this... It's the final game of the year, the undefeated buckeyes are walking into the Big House, they are wearing their historic scarlet helmets. Then comes the team with most wins in division one history, the Michigan Wolverines dawning their all black... Just imagine it.
Now a third jersey for special occasions is fine, like the Green ND jerseys or the Army/Navy game uniforms, but that is because their colors are still on them.

Now that I think about it, maybe that's why UofM switched to Adidas so the company wouldn't be telling the school what to wear, and the school could make the decisions.

The combat uniforms use school colors or colors that reflect something about the university. I also think any school should be able to use black and white as they wish. The older generation may not like all the changes but alternate colors have become big marketing and even bigger in recruiting.
Historical reference for VT's black unis-"All-black uniform references the cadet gray-and-black regalia worn by Virginia Tech’s original football team and honors the school’s current Corps of Cadets."

I really like TCU's look, I'm about neutral on Boise's, was anti the VT numbers and 'trim', but I friggin' LOVE the matte-black/primer looking helmets. WAY COOL, imo.
I do think that most of the Nike Combat gear is 'trying too hard', but can see how some would dig it.

I love Penn State and Alabama's traditional uniforms, among many others. But I also loved the Boise look, and wished the Bronco was on both sides of the helmet. The VT look was good, but I can see how black is overdone and takes away from thier traditionl colors importance. Disclaimer: Georgia Fan: I love the Georgia Blackout, but black is a secondary color for them. It was an insane atmosphere at that game [The Auburn Game, we won't talk about the returns of the black scheme(s)].
At my former middle school, we were Royal Blue, Grey, and White, with Black creeping in at times. This was back before the Blackout/Whiteout crazes. We needed a psychology change, because our championship opponent had beaten us handily earlier that season. Our kids that season were all about playing in high school, so I asked our high school, which is a black/silver team, if we could borrow their black pants. They agreed. Long story short we got rained out and had to reschedule, the HS needed the pants back for Friday night, so by game time Saturday we were in our regular uniforms. We lost, but fought hard. Who knows if we might have had a Georgia-like energy from a uniform change.

I dig the new nike stuff, maybe cuz im a younger guy, but the new flashy stuff catches my eye. i absolutely HATE the boring penn state, alabama type looks our colors are black/gold. some of the coaches want to do a classis steelers/Iowa look, but i hate it. Its ugly Im trying to push them to get GOLD home jerseys with Black numbers next year, and GOLD pants with black stripe on side for their home pants. Similar to CALs all gold uni's but with black accent colors instead of Navy blue.

im a younger coach, but i like the old school look... IF your team has an identity and tradition (Texas, Penn St, Alabama, Georgia, etc...) but if you are a team like boise i think it makes sense to go with flashy unis. i did like their oversized helmet logo, but think it woulda looked better on both sides. I kinda dislike TCU's because i liked their bold black on purple look that they had goin on before. Also, West Virginia's unis this weekend looked good. And i will throw this out there- Texas Tech's unis make them look like a high school team. and i hate the yellow on yellow look. hideous. gold aint bad, but yellow on yellow is absolutely horrendous and should not be worn on a football field. but these are the greatest "new look" jerseys yet- Army's digital camo. wearetrue.com/blog/design/army-football-digital-camouflage-uniforms-by-nike/

This appears to be largely a generational issue.
Suffice it to say I fall on the side of crisp, clean and traditional with school colors - why include black?
Among the best unis out there IMO are Ohio State and LSU.
Let Nike screw with Oregon's look if they want. Leave others alone. Some CFB squads are starting to look like XFL or beer-league softball teams.

Nike tight fitting unis are uncomfortable. 2XL is actually a large.

I really liked the Boise uniforms, but could drop the grey blocks. Thought those were sweat patterns until I realized that they were the same on every player. I liked their logo that used more of the helmet. Didn't get the patterns and colors of the VaTech numbers and trim.
One of the HS teams in our area, used to play them, went all black in their uniforms this season. They were black and orange (they had all orange set which was hideous, even messed with the color balance on the camcorders), so going black isn't that big of a change. But they only had their orange logo (paw print) in orange on their pants and helmet. Everything else was black.

Wonder when Penn St. will get their combat uni's? LOL The answer, of course, is when Joe's dead and buried. Penn State's also a Nike school but I doubt that you'll ever see them in Pro Combats. Of course, PSU football is also a cash machine so they can afford to do it their way.

I LOLed over the comment on Boise's gray blocks looking like sweat stains. I thought that's what they were at first, too! Those uniforms looked like they were designed by a pre-schooler with a box of crayons!
I guess part of this is what the teams you grew up were wearing when you first got into the game. I'm probably still one of the younger guys on here, but I got into football just before Nike started messing around with all the weird new stripes and details and stuff. For example, I still think the old orange and medium blue Denver Broncos uniforms look 1,000 times better than what they've worn since '98 or so. Kids today love wearing all one color and think the "Pro Combat" stuff looks cool.
Now everyone's messing with their basic colors even! My HS alma mater's school colors are blue and orange (a tribute to the traditions of the 2 HS they consolidated when it was built, whose colors were blue/gold and orange/white, respectively), but one of the HCs I played for made gray a dominant color on the uniforms and related gear (letterman jackets, shirts, etc.) to save money. The next HC they had tried to drop orange from the color scheme completely for a few years because he thought it was cursed or something, but the current HC has brought it back.
Another local school around here has school colors that are orange and white, but a dominant color on their uniforms now is blue because they want to look like Clemson. I just don't get it. They used to look cool with orange and white, like the University of Tennessee.
I'm waiting for a team to suit up with all black with white numbers and not a single school color on them.
These "trendy" uniforms just look tacky and bush league to me. Give me Penn State, Notre Dame, or most of the SEC schools' any day. Those guys look like they're showing up to make a statement and put in a hard day's work. The trendy ones look like the team just babysat a bunch of kindergarteners during fingerpainting. It's like the difference between a nice business suit and a halloween pimp costume.

i love this years crop of Pro Combats (hated last years bunch) and Boise St/VA Tech are 2 of my 3 favorites. the reason i love the 2010 group is because Nike captured the school/local spirit so well in each one.
Boise St's asymmetrical design (Bronco on one side of helmet, logo on left knee, blue shoulder) represents the teams unique style of play and off center approach to the game. the italic numbers/text represent a Bronco charging across the plains. Nike just hit a home run with this stuff, proving they are the best at what they do
i think my #1 favorite is PITT's. that uni makes the player look like a bad ass steel worker. all the lettering and numbers are cut like steel beams and the blue and gold look like cold metal and a hot flame.
i like design that is good weather it be "old" or "new". i think Nike feels the same way. the Alabama, Oregon ST, and Ohio St Pro Combats might better suit the traditionalist. the houndstooth pattern should be on every piece of AL merchandise.

Agree, Army's uniforms in the 2008 Army-Navy game were the best uniform's I've ever seen. Duty. Honor. Country on the name plate, Boots to the Ground down one pant leg, West Point down the other. Nasty...
Everyone's favorite, the Oregon Ducks also wore the matte Black helmet last weekend. Matte is the new pearl in the world of helmet colors...

Everyone's favorite, the Oregon Ducks also wore the matte Black helmet last weekend. Matte is the new pearl in the world of helmet colors... matte is catching on, but not sure how long it will stay around. it looks great but i think there is a saftey issue with it, ive been waiting to hear from other designers in the sports world about this, but it seems the gloss coating on helmets provides a slicker surface for 2 helmets to "slide off" of each other on impact.
