Our district allows coaches to film our opponents the week before we play. We end up getting 3 films total.
Last week, we noticed the scouts filming our pregame and told them to stop. To me that seemed unethical, and a little odd. They were filming the pregame team session.
Do you think its ok to film someone's pre-game? Why or Why not? Do you film your opponents' pregame? If so, what do you look for and why?

what would be the point of filming pre game?
i dont think its unethical i just think its a giant waste of time and camcorder battery and tape
i cant see any advantage you could get from filming it

Who cares, are you running something in pre-game that you wouldn't run in the actual game? I know I try and peek over at what the other team is running in pre-game to see if they have any wrinkles or anything else they are running that we may not have seen.

Y'all are right about it not being a big, now that I look back on it. One of those things that we just shouldn't waste our time worrying about.

I have run the exact same 7 plays in pregame for almost 10 years ... even the order is the same ... here's the order to save you guys that may wish to scout us in pregame: all stops inside zone fly shallow gt qb draw smash
and, here's the best part for those that are "out for the advantage" of peeking at our pre-game team session --- WE USE 12 GUYS. i.e. sometimes it's a TE/1RB/4WR package ... sometimes it's 4wr/2rb...

use 12 men simply as a poke at those guys that think something will be gained from scouting our pregame. it's quite a chuckle to take a glance over at coaches watching us and their counting and scratching heads....
pregame is a way to warm up ... not "review the game plan" so why anyone thinks they should show something of significance in pregame is beyond me ... which means i'm somewhat baffled that someone could actually gain insight they didn't have from the pregame warmup.

last year during one pre-game ... an official is standing on sideline 'practicing'... getting used to our tempo, formation, whatever .... and he's lining up our reciever. then, he starts counting... and counts the next play. 4th play he comes up to our head coach and says "coach, just want to make you aware you've got 12 guys out there"... but, the best "12-man" story of all is my very 1st game at this school 3 years ago. we played at home... and the know-it-all gurus in the stands yell "coach, you got 12 guys... come on".. so, next play i send out 13 ... he yells something about it again... 3rd play we got 14.... he starts to yell something as i look at him... our team doctor - who was on the track - turns to the guy and says "i think he knows. now shut up before he lines 'em all up on offense."... hahaha

If I see one of the opposing coaches watching our pre-game I run a double reverse pass or flea-flicker.
We don't do either.

If I ever switch from the Dark Side, I'm absolutely doing that during pre-game.

Our staff has some big warm up analysts on it. I never get too worked up for it because if you haven't run through it by 20 min before the game, you are screwed anyways. They think everyone is out to get us and watch our pre game. I am stealing the 12 man thing now. Just wait until we go Full bone this week with 2 split outs and a slot/wing.

I coach freshmen and occasionally find myself watching their warmups to see what kind of athletes they may or may not have, but I try to avoid it because we always tell our players not to watch. The one thing I do like to get a peak at is their punters and long snappers so we have an idea of how deep to put our return man and what our odds of a blocked punt are going to be.

At the college level the quality control/interns are actually in charge of looking to see who is and isn't dressed in case any injuries happen during the week We also have coaches on the sideline timing their snappers during pregame,so we can get an idea of how they snap. When I was an undergrad, we had a coach who would sit on our bench and watch the other teams 7 on 7 and team, so he could get an idea of what teams are going to do. From know on whenever a coach asks me for a new idea. I am going to give him the extra guy on offense during pregame idea, and then explain why. Great job Huey

Just last week, our opponent's were watching us from the box. So I put in a 4 man front (we're a 3-5) with our two 330 guys. It was pretty funny glancing up at the box and seeing them write stuff down! I love the 12 man idea. I gotta pass that one on!

I took on the duty of being our head scout this year and I do get some good info from watching teams warm up, especially the 10 or so warm up plays they run. I learn who their starters are right away so I don't have to worry about catching everyones number during the game while I'm trying to watch more important things like blocking schemes, routes, backfield action etc. I also get a good read on their Kicker and Punters range. Obviously the game is more important but these are some things teams get out of scouting pregame.

stop making fun of 12 guys HUEY! ;D you are just getting ready for the Canadian game when you come up here to coach. with the unlimited motion, 65 yd wide field, 20 yd endzones, and onside punts your creative mind would explode with all the possibilities. think i'll go a baker's dozen next pre game called "quads trips empty"

I had a coach with a sick sense of humour who liked to hide all his pre-game run-throughs ( we ran I and wishbone, there wasn't anything sneaky about our offense), have the defense and the subs create a wall, and act like we had the ark of the covenant hiding in our backfield, just to sow some confusion in the opponent's ranks. I think he got a good laugh out of it.

We have been known to draw some plays up in the dirt and run them in pregame if we notice other teams are scouting us. It is hilarious watching them scribble furiously something we have absolutely no intention of running. To echo the others, pregame is to warm up and nothing else. But I love the 12 man idea, will have to try it as well.

As I stated earlier I've taken over scouting duties and there's no way I'd fall for rediculous trick plays and you wouldn't see me scribbling down anything. But from my experience, every team I have watched so far runs their base and most used plays in pregame. I will take note on what plays they ran in pregame and every single time I compare my notes from the game to the pregame its the same exact plays. Of course theres some wrinkles they won't show but it gives me a good idea of what their base offense is.

I don't take it the wrong way, you are right about tweaking the noses of those scribbling furiously like you are revealing something secret that they are not supposed to see. If I have a special formation or trick play it does not see the light of day until game time, never in pre-game.
