This Weekends games:
Won game 1 44-6 vs a pretty small team. We were up 20-0 at end of first quarter, 36-0 at the half. It could have been much worse, we subbed generously. We were just 2/10 passing for 1 TD, just missing several big plays. Execution was great in the first half, not so good in second, kids lost a little focus.
The leagues new “mercy rule” is a bit different. The opposition has the choice of “freezing” the official score when there is a 21 point difference and playing the game out OR letting the score continue and go running clock. So the official score would be 28-0, while the real score was 44-6 and we let them score. All of our new stuff looked pretty sharp. Opposition, well organized, lined up well, good stances, had no answer for us – had 3 players sitting in the off tackle- We ran a career low 8 off tackle plays and my QB didn’t score in this game- didn’t matter. First team scored on every possession but 1 and on that one, we were really experimenting with our new stuff. My 2 &3 back had NEVER carried the ball in a real game, the 3 had 2 scores, the 2 had 1. The 4 is new to us, played real solid.
Game 2, won 49-14, we were up 28-0 in first quarter, 42-6 at the half. We scored on first two touches. Team was from Canada- They went 12-2 I think last year and had put up some outrageous numbers. They had been practicing since April and were 4-0 coming into our game. VERY NICE people, fantastic. We were over the top generous in this one- someone doesn’t travel 2000 miles to get beat by 70 etc They attended my Seattle Clinic and had all my stuff.
We ran the Spinner Option and scored 2 times on first 2 touches with key breakers- new stuff. Had 14 different kids carry or catch the ball. We were 4/11 passing for 2 scores and just missed several- very windy day 25 mph winds. First team scored on every possession.
Much more fun coaching just the 1 team this year and being pretty hands off even on game day with my other 2 teams.

I will hop in here...
This is not meant to be an excuse, but for perspective, our opponent had 34 players, 25 of which are Older/Lighters....we have 7 older/lighters.
In Pop Warner, a team loaded with that many O/L's is usually stacked and handpicked. You do not get that many O/L's by accident, and if I could....I would do the same thing. We were playing a serious stud team... Oh, and pretty much all of their O/L's had to strip to their boxers to make weight... Terrific! Three of my older lighters have to stuff themselves with PBJ and gatorade before the game to make minimum weight...
To the game:
We fumbled on the opening drive... and the opponent recovered at the 50, scored in a few plays due to broken containment. Embarrassing.
Then on the second drive, we had a bad snap to the punter and they managed to block the kick, recovering at the 40, again scoring quickly.
Third drive, we started rolling. We marched down the field with the Load Option being the best play for us. They had a real difficult time with it, and the only way they could stop us is from inside pressure. They essentially brought the house, and the Gs just allowed the blitzing LBs to blow by them. So we turned the ball over on downs deep into their territory...but it was something of a moral victory in that we actually started making things happen. I was not pleased with my Guards, however...
They scored and the half closed with a deficit of 22-0.
They opened up the second half, and we stopped them 4 and out. My starting RBs came up to me, and said, "put us at line coach, someone has to block..." So I put my three best running backs at both tackles and left guard, and put my second string backfield in...they marched down the field at 5 yards a pop, taking the ball deep into their territory, eventually resulting in a turnover on downs...but again...we got proessively better...
On a side note: it was quite frustrating for me to hear the parents, and some coaches whooping and hollering over the second string tailback, and how good he was as a runner. People saying "he should have been there all along...blah, blah , blah..."
The only reason he performed THAT good, was the obvious performance of the starting RBs blowing the holes wide open on the offensive line...anyone could have made yards on that...and I was disappointed that one my coaches failed to identify that and joined the chorus...just a pet peeve (sorry)...but I digress...
We shut them down again, with a 4 and out...and took over on downs.
We marched down the field, and scored on an Inside Veer, once again, behind the blocking of our absolute best running back at T... The final was 22-6.
I was very pleased with this game. It was frustrating to be down 22-0 at half, but the boys rallied, and showed great character in the second half...and left the game with a smile. They did not get embarrassed. Instead, they zoned in and played ball, giving their parents something to cheer about...
After the game, I did not mention one word about anyone running the balll...although I did congratulate the kid who scored the TD, one on one...
Instead, I focused on the leadership on display from our best player, essentially pleading with me to put him in the game at offensive tackle. I told the kid how proud I was of him. His smile was so big, you would have thought I praised him for scoring a game winning TD.

We lost this weekends game 18-7 and I left the field feeling great. Last week we lost 11 starters moved up to the fifth grade team and had three practices to scramble together a backfield and totally revamp the defense. We are a DCUBSW team and had 4 of the "sainted six" installed. At one point down 12-7 we were moving the ball well and ran a 31 wedge where the blocking back was off to the races but slowed down and looked back and seemed like he didnt know where to go and was tackled from behind at which point we stalled a little. But not bad for three days with kids that were mainly reserves and were forced into playing key roles. Thanks guys for the support , good luck to all next week.

When is the "NEW STUFF" coming out? Can't wait for team chemistry and more offense.
Thanks.

Congrats coach - sounds like your kids really stepped up. If you did that well with basically only 3 days to prepare, I'm sure your team will have lots of success this season. Good luck the rest of the way.

Its going to take some work on all of our parts but we cant wait for next sunday. Good luck next week.

We have our first game tomorrow night under the lights against our rival 56 miles away.
I have 18 players on my team this year, 13 of them are first year players.
We have no game breakers on offense but I like our line and our qb is solid but S-L-O-W.
We are getting better every day, We have two series installed, buck and rocket.
I expect a solid performance tomorrow night, but as usual I am very nervous and excited to get this first game over with, to see where we are at.
Should be a beautiful night here in North Dakota, I can't wait.

Hey guys want to start by saying this is my first year as a dc and I have picked up some great stuff from reading this forum and thanks to all the guys that have answer my questions. We had our first game on Saturday I thought are def. played outstanding we lost 0-6 to a city that is 3 times the size of ours. But what was even more impressive to me was that our HC and OC didn't punt the ball once giving the def horrible field position every series. We only gave up the one score because our HC went for it on 4th and 20 on are own 25. I think we still could have stopped them had we not taken a 15 yard pentaly place the opposition on are 1. FYI for those that don't know in Canadian football the D lines up 1 yard off the ball it's almost a free score there.

We got out of town with a victory last night, 18-12.
I found out how slow my team is this year, wow.
things to work on before game two.
We have to hold our blocks longer We need to work on open field blocking with moving targets. I need to install our audible system. I need to increase intensity in practice. Too many kids standing around watching other people make tackles.
Things I liked our core plays worked well we stretched the field with our passing game we had pretty good line play we had 4 QB sacks

Coaches
Yesterday was our first game, also was our first time live against an opponnent. They came in having already played 3 games & 4 scrimages. Well we looked horrible, only problem they were worse. We kicked off went down & covered. We seemed faster & more physical from the start. First 3 plays, they lost 8 yards, 4th down they punt. We set our return to the right(their sideline). We set a great wall get 2 great blocks, one crushed a kid, & score. We run naked get the deuce. We kickoff & cover, getting a huge hit. 3 plays no gain, they decide to punt again. On the return we get a couple of great blocks one knocking 1 of their kids out. We score. During the injury timeout I talk to their coach, he tells me "Wow you guys are way to physical for us", the game is only 3 minutes old. We haven't run one play on offense yet. On the play my big H back tweaked his ankle. We run naked again for the deuce( our kicker was out this week) second H back drops the pass. 14-0. We kick & cover putting our second D on the field. Get a pick on their second play. Finally we go on offense. Look real sloppy just not sharp. It took 6 plays to score. 22-0. We bungle our next series fumbling on the 6 (bad zone read mesh). Even with our second D on the field we only gave up 1 first down.
Half time I rip my team for their lack of focus. I talk to their coach making sure everyone was ok. He again tells me my team was too physical. We return the kick to mid field, getting some great blocks. Run Zone read for our first play. We house it getting 3 great blocks downfield, one by our QB who decleats a player. 28-0. Game over, they call the game. We shake hands, say a prayer with them. They were real nice people just not prepared to play at our level. All of their kids were ok, the kid who was KO'd was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Now comes the hard part. I am going to have to convince our guys we stunk. They know we were't crisp. Next week the regular season opens & we have work to do. I did see some good things, our TB & QB are for real. We block very well downfield. Our D will be very strong again. Second unit needs work on boot counter reverse. Our second DE who is a little green is a player, he made a great rip to beat their tackle & get a sack. He also surprized me, I had thought he was a little soft.
Hope everyone else had a good weekend!
Joe
