We are a small rural school with a losing tradition (last winning season 1994). This is our second year at the school and getting kids has been very difficult. We started camp with 23 (freshman included!!!) and suited up 17 last night for practice. Two kids are out for the season, 1 is out with a concussion, 1 is out with shoulder injury, 1 is out with hamstring, and another quit because his mother is battling cancer and wanted to stay home with her (tough home life overall). I have never experienced anything like this. Our numbers were low last year but atleast we had enough to scrimmage in practice.
Keeping morale up is difficult. Coaches do everything we can to stay upbeat and not show frustration to the kids. We have to go 1/2 line and coaches have to step in on scout. School starts on monday with first game that friday the 3rd. We are going to have open tryouts for anyone who would like to come out for the team. We have no choice. We need kids. How can you go to a varsity game with 17 kids??? A few more injuries and possible ineligibility (few kids had academic issues last year) we have no team.
Has anyone else ever gone through this? Have you ever tried to recruit kids after two-a-days? Season is starting to feel like its over before starts.

Been there, done that. It's a tough situation. We didn't allow anyone to come out after 2-a-days, but I don't think that was the best choice for the team.
Looking back, I would allow people to come out, but make sure that they had the same amount of time to acclimate themselves to football that your team did. 2-3 days in helmets only, 2-3 in shells, then I would say at least 5 in full pads. This does a few things: 1. Eases them into it. 2. Makes sure that they are making some sort of commitment to the team. 3. CYA
I think your team time should be done on bags or trash cans for the OL, and most of your scrimmaging will have to be 1/2 line.
