We are down here in FL searching for ideas. Last week we had 3-a-days. 15 practices from M-F. Regular practice, kicking game, regular practice. Kids did great. However, they come back from a tough week of camp and the first two practices of this week have been been horrible--they are dragging.
What are some things you guys have done to amp up the intensity in practice? We are thinking about making things more competitive and possibly rewarding the winner with something. This is the first year we have really ran into lifeless practices. We usually have kids who make it interesting (i.e. mixing it up, challenging each other). This team is made up of a bunch of good, tough kids, but it seems like they need a boost.
Hope to hear from you guys!

Coach, you described our exact situation. @ a days in the early and late morning then total team stuff in the evening. Great first week then the kids are sleep walking through our first practices this week. Here's my theory: our good hard working group of kids who have done position drills and what not all summer are now...bored. We are not game planning for an opponent right now. It is all technique work. That stuff can definitely get monotonous. We have a very good group so this is my only explanation. I'm not losing my head because I remember how it was as a player. If you are there all summer it sucks to have to wait for the guys who never showed up to learn what you already know.

A couple of things we have done: 1. We had a lineman appreciation period where lineman ran routes on air, and skill guys went through oline drills. 2. Tug of War Competition- We divided by position groups 3. Took the entire team to the pool one afternoon.
The other thing we did was turned inside run, 7-on-7, and our team period into a competition. We had a 3rd down day and went 3rd and 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 during 7-on-7. We started with 10 gassers for each group. You win, we reduced a gasser. You lose, we add a gasser. During inside run we went 3rd and 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. During team we went from 3rd and 10 to 3rd and 1. The kids got fired up and it made things a little more fun. We also shortened our indy periods for a couple of days, and cut practice down so they could get their legs back.

Practice on the game field and play music over the PA.

sometimes a change-up is all you need. Alter the practice schedule, shorten various periods that seem to drag on. Once, many years ago when we did sprints at the end everyday, we cut it to 1 sprint and you would have thought we bought everyone a puppy.

We throw a game in every now and then at end of practice. The current favorite is a variation of dodgeball with foam balls and the endzone as boundaries to start and then we shrink the field as the team is eliminated.

Just for variety some days we do all Individual and Group in AM, all Team (including Kicking Game) in PM.
I use different Agility, Hitting and Tackling drills and work on different keys during Individual.
Second Week we focus on defending a different offense (T, I, Spread, etc.) each day as opposed to our own. Also start blocking different defenses (those we anticipate seeing in scrimmage).
In PM for Warm up we do a different drill - Pursuit, Interception, Scoop 'n Score, TTO, Block That Kick, Shallow Crossfield - rather than Stretching or Form Run.
We change up Conditioning drills in AM, do a fun "Finish" drill at end of PM.
There's no getting around the hard work that needs to be done but we try to remove routine drudgery and therefore staleness as much as possible.
