We seem to have a growing trend with our OL wearing those cowboy collars and I will be honest that I am not real sure what they are even for. I assume they are like the old neck rolls but it seems to me that the guys wearing them can't get their heads up far enough when they are in a stance. Maybe I am over analyzing. Just wondering if anyone has pro's/con's of the OL wearing those.

I always laugh when I see guys wearing them without the plastic reinforcer on it. = all show.

Yea I'm not a huge fan of them either. Our TE can't get his head up at all in his stance, my right guard got his butt ripped so much for missing blitzes that he finally decided to take it off.

Noticed a serious drop in play when one of our guards adopted the neckroll about halfway through the season. Suddenly he starts missing the flowing LB on pulls

Pretty much a fashion accessory.

Pretty much a fashion accessory. I agree. I only let the player wear one if they are still able to get their head up.

Yeah I wore one of these for only one game during my senior year. I couldnt keep my butt up in my stance or keep my eyes up, I dont like them at all.

After enough stingers, our trainers put a neck roll on my shoulder pads in college. Fortunately, in our offense, I played about 50% of our snaps in a 2 point stance.
I would have never been able to wear one of those in HS. I wouldn't have been able to see the defense from my stance.

We do not allow our players to wear one unless by doctors note, obtw, we haven't gotten a doctors note yet.

What injuries (and how) are they supposed to help prevent?
Surely anything that forces the head forward is more likely to cause the player to hit with the top of their head (and thus injure them and others)?

Not for the OL, no. I'm kinda partial to butterfly restrictors for LBs because they always felt the best to me (I don't like the shock boards or w/e they're called, collars never felt right, rolls were too big).

We have used both the Cowboy Collars and the Butterfly pad at the back of the shoulder pads and neother have let the lineman wearing it get their eyes up. We use them for stingers but dont like them for linemen
