I always hear of coaches getting out to go to work in the private sector..
What are some jobs in the private sector that they are taking?
Im not coaching this year.. and all jobs in my cert area are filled around here.
Worried I may end up without a job.

Right now I'm doubling up working at the hospital as a nursing assistant. Good money for the job (i spend most of my time on here or reviewing film/working on football stuff)

Took a job in the oilfield industry. Lucked out on it big time. Didn't have any prior experience, but company I work for put me through formal and on the job training...haven't looked back since I got out, although I have been getting the itch to get back into coaching something awful... Money is great, but l'm beginning to get stares/dirty remarks when I draw up plays on post it notes and I'm on here for about 3 hours a day....

Yea the oilfield industry is HUGE here right now with the Haynesville Shale.. A good buddy of mine just got in pretty good at a company that power washes the equipment after they drill.. If nothing else I may check that out. Just wondering if the money would be right.

a lot of folks will do the HUDL/ DSV sales reps.....you can never really go wrong with sales (tough racket), because there really isn't much to qualify a person (either you can close, or you can't).
How relevant to your skill sets does one want to stay, with the economy not being stellar and with employers facing the major redflag ('heres a guy qualified for something else and will likely leave once a position in his profession pops up again"....)?

When most companies hire sales people, they are put through an extensive battery of tests and or interviews. Huge investment in time and opportunnity cost for companies with sales people. Closing is the natural progression of the process, but in all actuality is a VERY SMALL part of the skill set required. It can be taught to people with the right mind set, disposition learning ability and work ethic.

I know a few former coaches who are now insurance salesmen and one who went into a management role with a clothing factory.

I am in the same boat coach. The job I was almost 100% sure on fell through so I am moving back to where I use to live. I wont be teaching more than likely, so I am gonna look for something in sales, commission based, or management at a company. It sucks because I barely finished my degree a year ago and still will not have been able to use it. I will probably just be taking the first place that offers me a job.

After ten years at the high school and college levels I entered investment banking with Smith Barney, and then Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. The money was good but I missed coaching and teaching every single day. In fact, I got to the point where I was flat out miserable. If teaching and coaching is in your blood, you will be miserable doing anything else.
I am very excited to be back in education!

I'm in the other boat...in private sector, hope to coach one day.
The ones I knew that went into private sector went into construction of some sort or insurance, but those guys didn't have coaching in their blood.
My advice, if you can find a job for this year (private sector) take it, and see if you can live without football. If you can't, use the year to rest and restore, and start working on next year.
Is relocation an option?

Is relocation an option? Coach is in my blood for sure... just did not want to take a job just for the sake of having one.. So.. my plans are to wait until Jan to see if I can find a coaching job that I really want.. I possibly have an elementary teaching gig lined up.. could coach at the high school there.. but just not sure if I want to. Will have to see how it shakes out.

The other thing you can do is substitute teach, or be a long term sub. You also have to have teaching in your blood as well. If you aren't sure you aren't sure. Then you may want to look at something else. There is nothing wrong with teaching elementary and coaching high school ball. It is a lot better than not coaching.
