I'm sure this has come up before on this site, but just out of curiosity: On your staffs who calls the plays the head coach or the offensive coordinator?

If the HC is not the OC then the OC should be the one calling the plays. That is what he's hired to do. However, if the HC wants a certain play called at a certain time/situation the OC needs to call that play. Example: In 2005 I was the HC but not the OC. I think I maybe called 5-6 plays all year where I told the OC to "run tat NOW or next play."
Otherwise I made suggestions of stayed out of his way. It is important to have a good understanding so the OC knows when you are making a suggestion and when you are giving a command.

Chuck has it right. The HC is the man - that's why he's the head. Was OC at an NAIA school and probably had the header overrule me 5 times total in 3 years. One time he changed the play in a goal line situation (the play resulted in a turnover) and I was ticked off to the max - I really let him have it over the head-set! At half time we both settled down and are still great friends, but he did tell me that if he felt the need to do it again, he would.
Now I'm the head coach and the OC. When we're on defense I'll try and give our DC info and help him out, and I may even suggest a stunt once in awhile. The only thing I ever "call" is when I feel a blitz is not needed. Otherwise, he's the DC, but I'm the head coach.

Every time I hear a coach at a clinic rank the importance of the three phases of the game they invariably say 1. Defense 2. Special Teams 3. Offense. Why is it then that the VAST majority of Head Coaches also Coordinate the offense (least important)!!??

Because offense is more fun Myself and another coach on staff are co offensive coordinators. He is up in the booth and I am down on the field. I will call about 70% of the plays and he will call the other 30%. This past year was both our second year so we are both just cutting our teeth. We try to bounce ideas off of each other and it worked out real well for us. There were things that he saw that I didn't see or think of and conversely there were things I saw or thought of that he didn't. Over the course of the season, the HC demanded about 5 plays, two of which went for TD's and 1 more that should have went for a TD. There were various other times where he suggested a potential play that we may or may not have ended up calling. He tried to stay out of our way as much as possible and it worked out real well. Ultimately, it is his call if he wants a certain play.

the best is to have a head coach/dc. they do not want to be involved in the offense anyway. As I have told the dc, your job is to get the ball back so we can score.

I agree about giving the title OC to someone and not letting them call plays. I f you have one he ought to do it. I guess my question is really how many head coaches are not also the offensive coordinator? When I took my first head coaching job several years ago the head coach at the school where I took over had been there for 22 years and had not been the OC or DC in all that time. I always wondered what the hell did he actually do? He had the same OC and DC that entire 22 years and I inherited them them as well. Great coaches, but still an awkward situation.

School I am at we have an OC but the HC will still call the running plays. Our HC is also our O-line coach and a former OC, and he calls run plays. If he wants to pass he just tell our "OC", our QB coach, and he calls the play. Our OC will make suggestions to our HC in the running game. It is more like having an passing game coordinator then a OC, but he does have the title of offensive coordinator.

I think the point of an OC has been lost. The OC is supposed to Coordinate the offense through out the week. Other wise he would just be called offensive play caller. It is very possible to be an OC and the HC still call the plays.
