I try to be open minded about soccer, but every time I do, it comes back to bite me in the rear. This week I was trying to be the good husband and give my wife some alone time so I signed the girls up to go to soccer camp. Not just any soccer camp, one taught by a huge group from England that does this for a living, they come to the states every year. Pretty well known etc
Well- 3 hours a day, at least 90 minutes of it sitting listening to them blather on endlessly about nothing. I knew it would be a bomb in the first 15 minutes when they asked the kids to do a movement, without breaking the movement down. They also were using the term “stay in the magic square” without EVER telling the kids what the Magic square meant- every drill and game went beyond the magic square.
Were they nice people with good intentions- sure, but golly they couldn’t coach a lick.
All this could have easily been squeezed into an hour each day.
First day, 180 minutes there, gritting my teeth for every minute. They bring the kids together and I tell the guy next to me- Im not a betting man, but my $200 to your $20 they don’t finish by 12:05- of course its supposed to end at 12:00-
He wouldn’t take the bet- I would have won with plenty of time to spare. I guess 180 minutes JUST wasnt enough time for what they needed to do LOL. My rule #1, NEVER go over.
Then you have to be around the soccer crowd, plenty of nice people Im sure, but 1 guy really stood out. He brought his Pilates mat and was doing yoga and Pilates moves in tight biker shorts- yep not way off to the sides, right in the middle. Day 2- he shows up on 90 degree day in hikers shorts, hiker boots, huge headphones, big hat, hikers vest AND a set of ski poles to go walking around a completely flat grassy area. I had to leave for a few minutes and laugh in my car so as not to embarrass the poor guy. Ive been coaching football for 21 years and thought I had seen it all- I just dont see this guy showing up at football practice playing his little games. THis daily torture did help me drop a few pounds though- I totally lost my appetite after every session.
