Okay, so I have been debating about posting this for a few days now... I'm just gonna do it.
I coach a freshman team this year and we played an in-conference opponent this weekend. We crushed them 41-0 with a running clock in the second half.
Now, I would like the team to be able to take the credit for this, but I can't. The team we played was so poorly prepared, it was ridiculous... I have never seen a unit so badly coached. I mean, I'm no Lombardi, but what the heck... Here's a short list of the things we saw on film.
1. We were up 14-0 in the 1st quarter and we had them pinned with their backs to end red zone. They were on the 10 yard line with a 4th and 15 ahead of them. They call a fake punt... Their punt formation was a normal 2x2 SG formation; the QB was either roll punting or trying to throw. They had bobbled 4 snaps out of the SG already, they fumble this one, we scoop it up for a score. This wasn't the only time this happened either; they tried 4 more fake punts, 2 of which when they were pinned in the red zone again. We dropped them on all 4.
2. They were a SG unit.. It didn't look like they had repped the SG snaps at all; almost every snap was off the mark. Too high, too low; it was a good thing their QB got used to grabbing at them. They fumbled over a dozen snaps.
3. Their OL was set up in 2 point stances; WITH THEIR BUTTS AT THEIR HEELS!!! They trying to block out of a full squat stance...
4.(This was just one of about a dozen "interesting" offensive schemes) They ran a QB counter off of their jet sweep, but the OL wasn't trapping, they were OZ blocking towards the sweep. The QB wasn't reading it either; he'd flash fake and then drive towards the backside B gap; right into the DL. We figured the kid just screwed it up; but the film showed him taking that track every time. Even when our backside DE flew up field and lost contain.
5. Offensively, we were running a lot of toss sweeps; it's our bread and butter this year. We hit several of them for big yards and scores; mainly because they wouldn't stop stunting 6 guys up the middle. They were in a 3-5 stack and the DEs and OLB/spurs were on an island all day. I could see stuntiing like that if we were banging Isos in there, but were ran off-tackle powers, toss sweeps, bubble screens, and double slants all morning.
I know this is kind of a strange rant; it was an easy win for us. But it still bugs me to see this kind of poor coaching. I know a W is a W and we're glad to take it, but good lord. It would have been better if they had given us some competition; we've had to spend all week putting the game in perspective for our kids. They started developing some inflated egos that we've had to stomp on harder than we wanted to.
Am I totally out in left field for being kind of bothered by this?
