In the advent of getting student to play FOOTBALL with no football background...
What questions would you put on a TEST to make sure they know some of the basics.
such as 7 men on the line motion offsides pass interference

Rather than a test, you could just have him come to the office for 15 minutes a day, and go over things. One day you can go over pre-snap offensive rules. One day you could do holding/running rules on offense. etc...
It's hard enough getting kids to come out, so I guess I wouldn't suggest making him feel like, "I'll never learn all the stuff, so why should I come out" if he fails the test.

I find many kids don't understand many of the rules. This based upon a few things, one, it doesn't directly effect their position, and two, the confuse NFL or College rules with HS. I find that many times rules are taught when an infraction happens during practice or guys are complaining about something. I am not real sure what the orginal question is pertaining to but I know guys get confused on the rules.

I'd agree with aztec.
I could care less what he KNOWS and more about what he can DO.
I'm sure we'd get most of our kids (and some of coaches) flunking a 'test'....but we've got kids that can run and hit...and really, that's all I want

Coach, The biggest hurdle we face with 1st year varsity players that have never played before is language. Terms like sky, invert, spike, skip, punch, roll over the top, MOFO, it's like a foreign language to these kids.
Here is how that conversation goes on my practice field. 1st Year TE - "Coach, who do I block on 24 Arc" Coach (me) -"On 24 Arc , You Arc block to Primary Run Support" 1st Year TE- "Primary Run Support?' Coach (me)- "Yeah, most of the time he is the Outside Invert" 1st Year TE - "Who? Invert?" Coach (me)- "Just go hit the kid holding the blue bag and I will explain the rest during the next water break"
I'll maybe get 1 or 2 of those guys a year. Many of them turn out to be pretty good ball players. But I never get 30 in one year.
Good luck, Coach

Aztec, I don't teach in the same building but we do get 25 days (in the summer) in ILLINIOS.
I don't want to demoralize kids with Fs but point out the little things for success!!!
coachveer, yeah me too, I call him an overhang.haha
