I know some coaches are not in favor of using awards for motivating there teams but I would like to hear from those that do awards for defense, special teams, offense, practice player of the week. What type of rewards do you use? 1. Tee Shirts 2. 3. 4. 5. thanks cowboy17

I have a group of 13-14 year olds, and we have a couple of different awards each week. Firstly, we have "hustle cookies". This started when these kids were 9-10 years old, and would have six hustle cookies each week - three on each side of the ball. I have been following this group along for the last five seasons, and when I asked them last year if they were too old for hustle cookies, they universally said not a chance. Our manager bakes these massive cookies, and they get handed out each week to a variety of kids - sometimes a "star" player, but most often an unsung hero who is unlikely to get his name on one of the end of year awards.
The other VERY popular award is "the big stick". We give one out on either side of the ball for the biggest hit of the week. It's a big 2' x 8' that I saw in half, and put offense and defense on each stick. When the kid is awarded the stick for the week, he puts his name and the date on it, and gets to keep it for the week. The next week, he helps us award it to the next winner. It's neat to follow the history of the stick throughout the season, along with the little inscriptions and decorations the kids add to it as the year wears on.

When we win we give a Hammer Award for the big hit of the game. It's a $5 hammer painted in school colors and the score of the game and the player's name. For a defensive score we give the Scoop and Score Award- a bag of Jelly Bellies.

Phantom, I like both of those ideas, espeically the bag of jelly bellies! Very creative. I like all this kind of stuff far better than the helmet stickers. Some guys swear by the helmet stickers, but I have just never been wildly enthusiastic about them...

They fall off, guys lobby for them, etc. It's amazing what kids will do for food. During a game if we get a pick in the open field you can hear kids on the sideline yelling, "Jelly beans". The best part is that we give them out after the Thursday practice but I buy them on Monday and poach out of the bag all week. That's why we always get the "Assorted Sours". Oh, I forgot- we also give everybody on the team donuts after a shutout.

As usual , good stuff phantom..never believed in this stuff too much till i had a bag of halloween candy in my pocket by mistake one day at practice..kid makes an awesome catch and i threw him a chocolate for fun and you'd think i'd threw him a twenty..
haven't been able to stop the tradition ever since..anytime we make a great play in practice they are begging..makes for a lot more fun (and effort) than i ever thought.should try to think of something more nutritional but.....

Similar to phantom's hammer award, we have the Rock Squad. Those who make a huge hit in the game are given a gold painted rock (one of our team colors). At the end of the year whoever has the most rocks is Captain of the Rock Squad for the year and given a trophy. This past year we had a local business donate a boom box for the player of the game. We have also given out coupons for a Whopper meal from Burger King for each sack.

I really like the hammer idea and may try to implement it. I also really like the donuts- brilliant. We currently do the helmet stickers, and the kids really enjoy them. We give them out during pregame meal and the kids put them on their helmets before the game.

agreed on the food and we have the skull decals we put on the helmet for big hits and they really take pride in that,,,we go through sportsdecals and have never had trouble with the stickers falling off, real good quality in my opinion.
