Read a Lou Holtz book once when he talked about some NFL coach who walked in at 6am and was told by his secretary that Vince Lombardi was on line one. Not wanting to admit to Lombardi beating him to work he told his secretary to tell him that he was in a meeting.
Read in a Belichek book that he once told an interviewer that he got to the office 1/2 an hour before what ever time his rival coach lied about getting to work.
Sometimes coaches use hours as a badge of honor, when all that really matters is "are you successful" Works in reverse sometimes as well, Steve Spurrier used to brag about how much golf he played. It's not the hours you put in, it's what you put into the hours.

in the nfl the hardest working guys are the offense and defensive quality control guys. these guys are guys who are trying to bring into the nfl and become what are call drill or position coaches.
QC guys usually coach a position or assist a coach at a position and then they are responsible for the film work. I can tell you this while head coach marty schottenheimer was drinking scotch and courting women at the local bar then OQC Mike McCarthey(now packers head coach) was working his butt off. How do I know this b/c i was MM go-pher.
odd pecking order in the nfl. if you are a real coach women flock to you. if you are the qca or assistant to the qca we got college girls.
