As a former idiot HS and mid-major (I know, it's a basketball term) college football player, I was caught up in a coach cussing incident. Coach pulled me out of a spring practice scrimmage after only a few plays. I was really frustrated with myself, not playing well, hadn't played well since I got to college. Said several unpleasent words in a row which I thought were under my breath (even though my father heard them up in the last row of the upper stands at the oppisite end of the stadium). An assistant coach (not my poisiton coach) grabs me by the facemask as starts yelling at me about respecting the coaches. Actually, my first reaction was to grab him by the wrist and break his arm (defensive lineman sometimes think that way) but I didn't.
I was really cussing and upset with myself but when the coach started yelling I basically froze and didn't respond with any kind of defense. The situation became much larger than it really needed to and I ended up still on the team but with zero playing time.
My point is sometimes the cussing is just a outward expression of other issues. Not saying the cussing is acceptable and each situation (player, coach, team, school, parents) is different, but sometimes 15 -21 year old kids, who we ask to be very aggresive, just get a bit turned around.

I think this is one area where coaches are really very hypocritical. they demand their player not swear or be great sportsman but then they swear constantly or show lack of respect for the ref. it is like bobby knight demanding he players be great sportsman and then him tossing a chair in anger at the refs.
if you have ever been to a clinic presentation by alex gibbs your ears will be stringing from profanity. however he never gets upset when a player swears b/c he knows how he is. he even goes to strip clubs with his players as a from of unity.
I do not think their is a place for swearing in public for coaches. you would not hear a lawyer act this way in a court room. if a kid swear or coach swears we address it by doing up downs right then and there.

Who says that cussing at a coach is always a bad thing? I agree that this type of behavior is totally unacceptable in a game situation or in most situations, but COULD be acceptable in practice (or in the RIGHT situation). Let me elaborate. My defensive coach was always cussing me out and belittiling me. Man, i really began to dislike this gentleman. Then one day i had enough and used some of his own language on him. He looks at me with these big eyes and laughs... He tells me he has been waiting for me to "Stand up and be the man." I now realized what a genius he was. He saw something that I didn't and found a way to bring it out. A bit unorthodox, but effective. He was the most loved and hated coach on the staff... On another note, anybody see the file, "The Last Game?" During practice, the head coach and players yell at each other and exchange expletitives. But, they were highly successful... I think it all depends on the tone you set as a HC, and when and where certain types of behavior are acceptable. But, then again, I am a rookie football coach...
