What times do you guys practice during August two-a-days? How long are the practices?
Why did you choose these times and what do you feel are the pros/cons?
We practice 6am and 6pm. Definitely good for the heat. Not-so-good for resting and also when do they eat? I'm looking for other options to bring up with the staff.

We've done it several different ways.
This season we're doing one longer practice with a break in the middle.
5pm - 9/930pm
5-7 Offense + Special Teams 7-730 Lift 730-8 Break/Dinner/Chalk Talk 8-930 Defense + Special Teams

Personally I think we all overthink the "beating the heat" idea. We do the 6am 6pm thing, but run in to the same problems mentioned earlier. When I was in college we went at 7am and came back at 3pm. The second practice was a little shorter and focused more on special teams. This worked really well for us, because we would get off the field in the am by 10:00, catch a 3.5 hour break before coming in for meetings and a lift at 1:30, practice at 3, then break for dinner with meetings late night. The heat at 3 never bothered me that bad....I mean, the next week when school starts everybody starts practice at 3 anyway.

We do defense at 8 AM and offense in the afternoon. We used to go at 3 but we;re moving it to 4 to get closer it a little cooler later in practice. Later than that isn't practicable since we don't have lights.
There have been a year or two when we've gone very early in the AM- 5:30- because there was an overlap with summer school. Hated it. Getting up at 0-dark hundred didn't do it for me. Getting the young kids there that early was also a real issue. Plus, around here it's still humid in the AM but there's also dew on the grass. Tired, hot, with wet feet is no way to go through life, son.

We go defensive stuff from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Then we meet back up and do our offense from 3:00-6:00. We usually meet for about a half hour before actually practicing. I think the kids like it because it gives them a chance to get a break, but they aren't breaking for too long. I've found that if you break for 8 hours, it is REALLY hard to get motivated again for another practice.

By our Section Rules we can't practice past 10AM or before 5PM anyday before Labor Day...after that it is open, but now it is dictated more by the actual school calendar as we are in session. Even scrimmages before that date must adhere to those restrictions. Regardless, If we double we go from 7-10AM and 5-7:30PM
We usually split focus on Offense & most special teams (punt, kickoff, k-return, FG-PAT) in the AM session. PM sessions are defense & punt return/punt block/FG-block. If we single, it is an AM only practice and we split time between Off/Def for about 80-90 minutes each.
If I had my way I'd still start @ 7AM, but extend the practice 1 more hour till 11AM and that would be it. I don't necessarily feel 2-a-days are always the best way to go. IF....and that is a BIG IF...our summer preparation is productive enough, then I cut out some doubles anyhow.

In the past, we've gone 8am-10am and then 5pm-7pm.
This year, we are doing one long practice at night 4pm-8pm with a 30 minute break in between for nutrition and re-hydration. It keeps us out of the heat, it gives the kids' bodies time to recover, it allows coaches on the staff who are not educators to preserve their vacation time, and it gives the kids back some of their summer if they want to work or go to the beach or whatever.
Yes, it means we have a little less practice time than we're used to...but it also forces us to be more EFFICIENT as coaches.
I'm looking forward to it.

If you've been doing Conditioning all summer your kids should be somewhat acclimatized to the heat, but you still have to be vigilant.
And of course there are parts of the country where it's impossible to deal with in certain times of day.
We go 9-11 am (Offense and Kicking Game), 1-3 pm (Defense and Kicking Game).
Every so often, just for variety, we'll do all Individual and Group in the morning, all Team (including Kicking Game) in afternoon.

Our HC hasn't set the schedule for this season yet but Soph-Srs go AM and PM and Frosh go one long session. School is starting very early this year and we are only going to get three days of two-a-days.

I really like the idea of going individual and group in the am and team in the pm...I've never been around a program that did that but I think it is an interesting possibility.

Morning practice was 8-10, and had the agility/conditioning stuff in it. Afternoon was shorter and had special teams where the conditioning was in the morning. Works good for us. Came in at 3 in the afternoon. Like someone else said, they practice at 3 the next week, might as well get them ready for it!

We go 8-10:30 and 5-7. I can not understand for the life of me why coaches practice at 2 or 3 in the afternoon on double session days. Toughening kids up and "getting use to the heat" are, in my opinion, terrible options and very counterproductive. It may be my imagination but the worst practices we have during doubles are when it is scortching hot....nothing gets done, reps are bad, and it is too hot to effectivly condition. Another thing, we have not palyed an ealry season Saturday afternoon game in 7 years. Go later when it cools down and you will get much more from you players. Players are like prize horses, not mules, treat them and train them as such.

Best it ever worked for us was 4-530 upper shell, break then 7-9 full gear. 1st practice focused alot on special teams, pass game, veer drills, tackling drills, etc... 2nd practice was more team, pass skell, etc...
gdn56 is correct. We need to be in the heat because next week that is when we practice anyway. Just have to be smart and give lots of breaks and have planty of water.

As posted we go 1-3 pm with our second practice and yes, it can get hot then, even here in Mid-Michigan.
But the kids and coaches both really like being done earlier and having a large part of the day left for themselves and more recovery time.
One year we went 4-8 pm and had a kid come down with heat exhaustion half way through one evening anyway, so going later when it's supposedly cooler is no guarantee of avoiding those issues either.

I've done it several ways as well, but right now we go 830-1030am and then 1230-230. Lunch/rest in between and sometimes film/meetings.

We are full two-platoon other than a couple of players and follow this schedule: 8:00 -8:30 Meeting 8:40 - 10:50 Practice 10-50 - 11:30 Break 11:30 - 11:50 Meeting 12:00 - 1:40 Practice 1:50 - 2:30 1/2 Lift - players lift every other day

7:30-8:30-Classroom or lift 8:30-10:30 Defense/Special Teams/Condition 10:30-11:15 Break/Lunch 11:15-12:00 Classroom 12-2:00 Offense
We do this the first week since we are 3 days out-of-pads, cutting it shorter Friday afternoon as we have the entire time in team and kids are tired. The next week we go from 2pm-7:30 with less time in the classroom and it acclimates kids to the post-school heat.
Kids like the early start since they have more recovery time (in their minds at least). I like it because they are fresher. The second week often is sluggish since kids seem to sleep till noon.

we start school so early that 2-a-days for us start the 1st day of school. We go 3:30-5:30pm and then 6:30-8:30pm. we usually go shells or shorten the 2nd practice as the week goes on. It gets to be a really really really long week
