I am taking over a small struggling program next fall. It is my first HC gig and I am very excited. However, I have to interview for a staff and I have the following issues:
1. There is only one returning coach from last year, he is a guide in the summer and probably won't be back in time for the beginning of two-a-days. I'm not going to give him a stipend, for two reasons. Obviously, if he's not going to be there when the season starts, he's not getting paid. Secondly, last year's team changed offenses FIVE TIMES and I don't want a guy on staff that is going to be pushy about that sh-t. We're running what we're running and that's all there is to it.
2. The only other guy that I can tell was really interested in coaching football was also in the running for the HC job, didn't get it and doesn't want to coach.
3. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest from the teachers in the school when it comes to coaching football. I only need two other coaches, but that may be a struggle.
4. I need to find coaches, but because of the issues above, my pickings may be slim. But, if I am going to try and get this program back up and running, I need guys that buy into my coaching philosophy; I don't want screamers or dictator types. Especially with the environment of this current school; the kids will quit.
5. I cannot be fussy about coaching experience; there's just not much of that around there. This is alright, in some aspects, because the right guy may be willing to learn from the experience. On the flip side, we may get 'Maddenites' with an obsession with Xs and Os; I have been down that road...
So, why type of questions do I ask in the interviews? I need to get a feeling for their temperament and how wrapped up they are going to be in the Xs and Os.
