Just wondering what the differences are. My DC (middle school) is wanting to move from teaching Wyatt's system of tackling to Cisar's system. What are the differences? advantages? disadvantages? Most importantantly which is safer?
Reason for the move is that though we are big up front our skill kids are undersized.

I think we should put them in a cage and see which one works best...

We are going to have a coaches meeting and watch the Cisar videos. We will then discuss how to implement. I have always been a Wyatt method guy, but I have never watched another video or listened to another person about any other way. I am going to open my mind and go another route. Dave Cisar definately knows what he is doing and my DC used his offense and defense to take an 11-12 year old team that has never won a game to a third place finish and a win over a team that had never lost a conference game in 8 years (also eventual one loss champions). I am not to proud to listen to people that know more than me. Maybe I should look at doing more things different and I might get out of my mediocre rut.
i just questioned because I was wanting info to take to our meeting, but I have decided to give DC Carte Blanche with the D, which is our weakest area. We average three TDs per game game but give up 5.

Coach
I think it really depends on your personal preference and your specific situation
If I were coaching a real big and athletic team (relative to my competition), my preference would probably be chest plate tackling. If I didnt play everyone on defense too or had zero mmp kids- maybe the answer is different.
I coach non select teams. We want to win our conference as well as beat the best select teams in the state and region (when my parents will travel). HEck this year we are playing a select team from Canada in August etc. They have 35 kids on their team, I have 21.
If you look at the number of "striped" players, heavy kids, for whatever reason where I am at now (the last place I was at I had good sized kids) I had teams with this number of stripers: 1, 2,1, 2, 4,3,1,1 and play against teams that had up to 8 stripers in league play out of league over 10 etc. Im also playing all my kids AND I play the weaker kids on both sides of the ball. I feel we need to tackle the way we do, if we were to try and chest plate tackle, we would get run over.
No offense to the chest plate tackling crowd. In all honesty I have NOT taught both. I have seen a lot of tape on how to teach it etc. However we have a few of our 8th grade kids that also play for the Jr High School program that chest plate tackle. In watching just 2 of these games I thought our kids tackled much more effectively and efficiently using our approach vs chest plate. Not a lot of data - VERY small sample size, who knows how well the school team was being coached. Maybe 7 kids etc probably NOT a good comparison.

Weirdly enough, I've never found that teaching a particular method of tackling automatically eliminates all other forms of tackling. In other words, it's okay to teach more than one form of tackling, imo.

Coach Wyatt is bigger than the average man...but a bit older...Cisar is Barry Sanders like...but when it comes to tackling Dynamite does come in small packages...both have been taught excellent fundementals... so I'd have to say Cisar tackles Wyatt 7 out of 10 times.
