I will be interviewed on the Red Zone Show by Coach Big B (Bernie Hayes) as part of his online clinic series. This will be done over 2 or 3 shows on Wednesday, May 26; Wednesday, June 2; and possibly on Wednesday, June 9. Each show will run from 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm, EDT. We'll cover the following topics: - The Youth Spread Offense
- The Screen Game for Youth
- Zone Running Game for Youth
- Youth Special Teams
That should take us through the first show. The second and third shows will cover anything we didn't get to on show one, plus: - Fundamentals of a Sound Youth Defense
- Details of Our 5-3 Man-Free Scheme
- Rules Knowledge for the Youth Coach
- Practice Planning and Methodology
- Dealing with Parents
Feel free to listen in and then post on here everything I got wrong, LOL. Seriously, Coach Hayes is a really good guy and his show is very informative. I'm proud to be a part of it. If you'd like to see a little more info about the show, go to the Red Zone Show's Website at theredzoneshow.blogspot.com/2010/05/red-zone-show-online-football-clinic.htmlI'll post a link to the actual broadcast (podcast?) when it gets a little closer to show time.

Me too Dave. I'm really looking forward to this. Best of luck with it Doug - it should be a lot of fun. First your doing sold-out clinic sessions, now a talk radio show appearance, what's next, your own show on cable? Can I be your agent? Dave Hartman CYFL Coach

When did they switch the show to Wednesdays? I thought it was on Tuesdays.

Coach Hayes does the show on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays, I believe. I'm not sure - he gave me a choice and Wednesday worked better for me.

Thanks guys. The show was a lot of fun. I know I skipped a lot of detail - each of the subjects we covered would be at least an hour session in a regular clinic setting, so it was pretty tough trying to condense it down to about 10-15 minutes each.
We'll be doing another session covering some defensive and general team management topics next week - I'll post the date & time info along with a link as soon as I have all the info.

I can read these boards but hearing the coach talk really makes it sink in. I downloaded the show and listened on my way home from work. After all my kids in bed, I laid in bed and listened again. I laughed to myself more than once as I thought how easily Coach Brown would have eaten up my defense. Great resource Big B. Todd

Thank you for the kind words. The key to a great show is great guests. I love his spread concept with kids because most coaches NEVER adjust to it. I use trips and let me tell you...you have to pop them quite a few times before they slide someone out to cover the trip side. I can't wait till next weeks show because QBA will send a rep in to talk about QB Development for youth football players and Coach Brown will finish his sp/teams, defense, and I think practice planning.

Yes, Part 2 is tomorrow, Wednesday, June 2. It's on a little earlier than normal this time - 7:00 pm EDT/4:00 pm PDT. We will cover as much of the following as we can fit in: - Youth Special Teams
- Fundamentals of a Sound Youth Defense
- Details of Our 5-3 Man-Free Scheme
- Rules Knowledge for the Youth Coach
- Practice Planning and Methodology
- Dealing with Parents
Whatever we don't get to will be covered in third and final installment. Here is a link to The Red Zone Show's page for this show: theredzoneshow.blogspot.com/2010/05/red-zone-show-youth-clinic-part-2.htmlAnd here is a link to the live feed where you can actually listen to the show (or the archive which will be up immediately following the live show): www.blogtalkradio.com/coach-bigb/2010/06/02/the-red-zone-show-youth-clinic-part-2In addition to me, Coach Hayes is also going to interview Coach Reid Roe from Quarterback Academy by Darin Slack. Coach Roe has coached very successfully at the youth level for a number of years. If you aren't already familiar with Coach Roe, here are some clips from his 10 yo QB (who also happens to be his son) a couple years ago: The show is scheduled for 90 minutes with me on for most of the first hour and Coach Roe for the remainder.

Doug Brown
Loved your presentation. I downloaded and listened to and from work so could not take notes. On you Kickoff/onside you designated two or three as gunners with the sole purpose of attacking the kickoff return player and knocking them to the ground. 1. which players do you designate as the gunner? 2. which players are they to attack? 3.can this be applied to either left or right hash?
Thanks. Todd

Thanks. Todd Thanks Todd - I appreciate the kind words. Regarding the onsides kickoff - we assign our L2, L4 and L6 players as gunners to go after their L1, L2 and L3 players, respectively. Our L1, L3, and L5 guys go after the ball. NOTE: We number from the sidelines in towards the ball (which is on the right hash), and from our perspective so our L1 is our guy all the way to our left, closest to the sideline, and their L1 is their guy all the way to our left on the front line (he would be considered R1 by them). We put 7 guys to the left of the kicker and only 3 to the right. I've tried it from both hashes, and with a right-footed kicker, it's easier from the right hash - it's tough to kick it across the field without hooking it a bit, so I'd only go from the left with a left-footed kicker. However, you certainly can do it from either direction. The idea is that by kicking a (somewhat slow) roller that will go about 20-25 yards across the field as well as 10 yards down the field, your gunners should be able to get to their targets before the ball gets there, allowing your ball hawks to get the ball with a lot less interference from the opposition. I hope that helps.

Thanks Doug. Do you call your kickoff from the sideline after your players line up, or huddle your players and send them out.
I noticed after a few games, teams start sneaking their "star" to the area of the onside kick. I wished at those time I could call an audible and kick a grounder up the middle.
I did not prioritize my kicking game enough.

I did not prioritize my kicking game enough. Todd Todd: I generally huddle them up and tell the kicker what to do, who then relays it to the rest of the team in the huddle. We did start having teams move their best players around, though, so I came up with the following audible system - I break the field up into a 3x3 grid (Left, Middle, and Right by Deep, Medium, and Short) and number them 1-9, then I just yell out the # of the area I want him to kick the ball to. I also make sure that our kicker knows who their biggest studs are and he knows to not kick the ball to them regardless of what I call out (unless I tell him otherwise, like in an end-of-game onside kick situation where we have to get the ball back or we lose).

Coach Hayes - We can do it Wednesday evening around 4 pm PDT (7 pm EDT) again, if that works for you. I'm flexible if that doesn't work for you. Give me a call tomorrow morning and let's get it scheduled.

We did the third and final installment last Weds (July 21). I apologize for not getting the word out in advance, but I've been having major computer problems for about 3 weeks now (which is why I haven't been very active on the board lately). I finally was able to get on the Internet today (not sure how long this will last - the last few times I've been on in the past several weeks have either been on my wife's computer or the connection only lasted about 30 mintues). Anyway, we covered the following on the show: Rules Knowledge for the Youth Coach, Dealing with Parents, and some Practice Planning and Methodology. Here is a link to The Red Zone Show's page for this show: And here is a link to the feed where you can actually listen to the show archive: www.blogtalkradio.com/coach-bigb/2010/07/22/the-red-zone-show-welcomes-coaches-choice-own-tom-buzzo-and-coach-doug-brownIn addition to me, Coach Hayes interview Coach Tommy Buzzo from Liberty HS in Virginia. Coach Buzzo is very passionate and very entertaining - he's well worth listening to. Coach Buzzo is on first and covers his 4-4/4-2-5 defense and a lot of general coaching philosophy for the first 45 minutes or so, and then I'm on for the last hour or so.
