I wanted to update you guys on whats been going on with my coaching job.
First let me say thanks to everyone here. I would not be doing the one thing I love without the help of all of you.
A little background.
I started coaching at the middle school level 4 years ago. spent one year there and was brought up to the high school to coach freshmen defense. Then last year I was frosh DC, JV DC, and Varsity asst D-line coach. Im at a 5A school so I was BUSY.
Now, after last season the HC decided to retire after 19 years as the HC at this school and 50+ years of coaching. Great coach and man.
Now it is may 7th and still no HC has been named. The current staff has been running off season workouts like normal. Well, now its to the point where I am running them by myself. Other coaches have quit or just don't show up or coach track.
The HC job is down to two guys. One currently on the staff and one from another school. Rumor is the guy from the other school will get it.
So, that means there is a chance I will be let go. A small chance since this school is on a hiring freeze. (I am a non teaching coach).
I have been really worried about not coaching these kids anymore. I have been coaching the upcoming Juniors since 8th grade, I would hate to miss these last two years with them.
So, yesterday the AD told us that we should stop the workouts. that's 3 weeks early. It makes me wonder why?
This whole situation is messed up!
I did get a surprise yesterday at the end of practice. I was talking to the kids and I let them know there is a chance I wont be here on Tuesday(last day of workouts) and that means there is a chance I wont be coaching them anymore. After I said a few words they all clapped for me and told me they loved me. The claps continued as I walked away.
Anyway just thought I would update you guys on my situation. Thanks for taking time to read this.

Sorry to hear about your situation, but thanks for sharing the last part. You are obviously making a difference and will surely do so at your next job, too.

It sounds like your doing it the right way. If you keep doing the job right, then the best oppertunities will find you.

You can have a job with me if you don't mind the commute to Florida everyday. Seriously though, it sounds to me like the other guy is going to be the coach and they agreed to allow him to pick his own staff. That is how it should be. That being said, it sounds like you are a valuable assistant. You don't need a position in the building. Present your case, and you will be around for a long time. Your roll may change, but I am confident you will work your way back. Hang in there!

For your interview, just read him what I quoted up there: you love coaching, you work hard, you love the kids, and they love you. Hopefully he will keep you on. Otherwise, wish him and the kids luck and some other program will be lucky to get you. Best of luck.

Hey things, you seem to be working pretty hard and doing the right things for the kids, which is whats most important. Even if the new HC gets to pick his own guys, I dont think that would for sure you would have to be let go. Like it has been said before, just talk to the new HC if he gets the position, and if it doesnt work out there, youll be picked up by another lucky school. Best of luck coach

God has a reason for everything brother. If you talk to the new HC and still don't catch on. Check with every other high school within driving distance. It may be too late to catch on as a paid position but if your situation allows it, volunteer for a season.

Ditto on all the above.
You have shown a lot of character, which is in short demand these days. Any HC coming in would be stupid to keep any of the other guys on staff that haven't been doing diddly, over you.
Surely he can't be bringing in an ENTIRELY new staff, so maybe there is as spot for you. If not, coaches with the character you have displayed will ALWAYS find a job.
Good luck

It may be too late to catch on as a paid position but if your situation allows it, volunteer for a season. I would volunteer at this school. I have never worried about the money. first year at the middle school I started as a volunteer and at the end of the year the HC found a way to pay me. First year at the high school I volunteered and the HC gave me some gift certificate's at the end of the year. Last year was my first year as a "paid" coach. A lot of people think I'm crazy to work for free, but coaching is not work to me. I love it more then anything. I always say if I win the lotto I would do NOTHING, but I would still coach football. The only thing I want is to coach the varsity d-line, I would still want the JV defense too. If I get that then no one has to pay me a cent. It would be nice, but not necessary.

I do have a question.
If/when the new HC comes in how do I state my case to him? The AD a while back said that the new HC will have to interview the current staff before anyone else. So I will get a interview. Now, I hate to say this, but a few of the coaches have no business coaching. The problem is this new HC has not seen the type of coach I am. How do I talk to him without seeming like I am conceded and without bashing some of the coaches?

Don't not mention or worry about the other coaches. Making any comments at all about other coaches is definitely not a good idea. It does not show good character, which it seems like you have. Hopefully the new HC will be able to figure out about the other coaches. I would think with the economy that it will be difficult for a new HC to fill all of coaching positions like mitch said, so you should have a good shot at staying on.

A little update. A new HC has been announced today. I accidently came across it online when I was looking for something else. It was not either of the two guys that I was told was the final two, but he is from a differnt school. Now I just gotta do what I can to stay on. I do agree with the hiring of this guy. went to state in 2007. I hope I stay on because I am excited with the future of the program.

With this new HC coming in should I shoot him a email now, just to congratulate him and introduce myself?

Hell I would think that would be a great idea coach. Let him know who you are and that you're happy he got the position and all that.

Why don't you talk to the college program where you are taking classes? You can also talk to other schools. They always need help at the lower levels. It is much better than not coaching!
