Our program slogan is "Count On Me". I really believe this completely encompasses what a TEAM is all about. Yeah, the word "me" is used within the slogan but the context pertains to reliability. How often do we as coaches take certain kids less seriously as prospective players because they are "unreliable"? All the time right. We have 5 Pillars of Success which are the five values that we believe if everyone exemplifies consistently that we are going to be successful. The 5 Pillars of Success are:
Commitment - It all starts here, definition of the term is "a pledge to do" Discipline - Doing the right thing, making sacrifices, attention to detail Effort - All we want is all they have to give Toughness - Mental and Physical Pride - No less than their absolute best (Not settling for 2nd when 1st is available)
We explain to the kids that if they follow this blueprint for any endeavor throughout the rest of their life they will be successful. Look at your own life, high school took these 5 Pillars...college took these 5 Pillars...your career in teaching and coaching takes these 5 Pillars...your marriage takes these 5 Pillars...fatherhood takes these 5 Pillars. I am not the type of guy that ever wanted to overwhelm my players with character education stuff. I feel like too much of that type of talk from a coach and the kids tune it out. But like anyone else that is serious about impacting kids I want to make sure they are better people for me having been in their lives. Our 5 Pillars of Success are simple to understand as a process and we instill it in football and hope they take it with them when they leave. The reminder we constantly make to one another coaches and players alike is "Count On Me" to signify we're going to everything in our power to be successful. They know how we've laid out the blueprint for them. So, anyway, long story short this has been our program slogan and will continue to be.

We have also used "Row the Boat". Now I'm going to go pretty figurative on you but stay with me because this is great. I have explained to the players that our football program is a boat that we need to row in order to head in the direction we want to go. As coaches, I understand that we are doing our fair share of rowing behind the scenes with preparation and organization, etc. However, we tell our kids that all we can do as coaches is point in the direction and it's up to the kids to row to get us there. We had our chance to play and we retired now it's their turn. I, as the header, am pointing in a direction and all the kids see is the horizon line and nothing in site. This symbolizes what we're all trying to get our kids to buy into and that is whatever goals they've set for the season. It's blind faith on their part, they need to believe what your selling and buy in. Your pointing them in the direction to achieve those goals with the weight room, conditioning, practices, etc. Players in the boat are characterized as follows:
1) This player is rowing hard all the time and never wavers, things get tough he still's rowing as hard as he possibly can. There is no doubt the team can count on this guy all the time.
2) This next player rows hard for awhile but when it gets tough he's done. Then when he feels up to it again he gets back to rowing hard. We can count on this guy sometimes.
3) This next player has a paddle in his hand but has no intentions to row. He likes his seat on the boat and seems satisfied with that. My high school coach used to call these guys "jersey wearers". You may see this kid dip his paddle in the water but there's no rowing going on. He's just going through the motions.
4) This next player is on board but has no paddle in hand because he has absolutely no intentions to row. This guy has a life jacket on and is awaiting his first opportunity to jump ship. You've had these kids before, you know what I'm talking about.
5) This last player is a dangerous one. He is the one who chooses to throw an anchor over the side of our boat. He's slowed us down, added useless weight, and is basically creating a resistance for our team on our journey. Now he may even row for you sometimes when he feels like it. But this kid is a detriment to the team. He and his anchor are keeping us from rowing toward that horizon. Cut him loose!
So those are the five possible types of guys that will be in your boat this fall. We ask them what teammate are they going to be? The reminder of their commitment to the team is "Row the Boat" and that is related to "Count On Me" as well. It's all connected. Last year we referred to the playoffs as "the show". We won 4 games for the first time in 10 years last year. We have most of our kids coming back because we only lost 3 seniors. We feel like this year could be our year to make the post season, something this school has done only twice in it's history. My slogan for selling that to the kids this year is "Row to the Show". I thought is was clever. Man this was alot between both of those posts. I love the concept of rallying cries for your program. It's an easy way to sum up what you think is important especially when you explain your entire philosophy in a meeting. Slogans also brand your football program which I feel is very important. Set your program apart. Finally, I believe in meaningful slogans not one's that look like they came off some cheap t-shirt designed by a guy who never even played on a team let alone a football team. JHMO.

That's been ours for many years, to the point that the HC got it tatooed on his arm. DAMMMM!!! Good one, though. Never have done a team motto, but might go with this one this year. New situation and all. Also been looking at "Passio - willing to suffer for the benefit of others". Got that one from the DSQA site. Definitely going to put this up on the weight room wall. They fit together.
