Any other PA coaches out there hearing that starting July 1st we will be able to wear shoulder pads along with helmets? If this is true could this be the PIAA's way of moving towards a college style schedule where you can not do 2 a days on consecutive days? I could see them saying "Well you have all of July to work out in shoulder pads and helmets so why do you need 2-a-days"

Wingtol,
I talked to my principal about this the other day and he said we were okay to do it once school was out. Now I am going to check if July is the starting date. The part about the helmets and shoulder pads is true, just no "skin to skin" contact is allowed. Contact must be with a dummy or shield held by another player. Not sure if they have ruled on sleds yet or not, but I think those are going to be okay as well. I think this is going to help a great deal and makes up for no spring ball, plus helps ease into full contact in August instead of starting cold turkey. PM me if you get a chance.

yeah no skin to skin contact. this includes 7 on 7 word is to run press coverage on defense the defender must use a shield then drop it and cover the receiver. I guess it depends how hard its enforced. But definitely a move in the right direction. It will be good to know who can catch a ball with a helmet and shoulder pads on. its amazing how a kid can catch a ball all summer then put gear on them they cant catch anything above there head.

Where is this rule located so that I can bring this up to my principal and AD. I would like to be able to use all of the time possible to get these kids ready during the summer and I know our school is completely unaware of this rule change. (As was I)

It looks like it is still pending guys. This is from the PIAA meeting in March. The next meeting is May 26th.
"VII. Proposed Amendments to PIAA By-Laws: A. Tabled for further consideration and review, a PIAA District IV Committee recommendation to amend ARTICLE XVI, SEASON AND OUT-OF-SEASON RULES AND REGULATIONS, Section 2, Rules and Regulations, subsection C, Football, Rule 2, of the PIAA By-Laws, to rescind prohibition on use of school’s blocking/tackling sleds by schools, community organizations or groups, Coaches, and students outside the PIAA-defined football season."

That's for using the sled. As far as I know the shoulder pads have been approved for use. Have your AD or Admin contact the PIAA to get the changes.

Just got word from my AD that Shoulder Pads and Helmets are allowed for the summer. Waiting on word about sleds which have not been voted on yet. No skin to skin contact allowed, must contact with dummy or shield. Still a progressive step!

Principal can allow helmets and shoulder pads. No sleds. Not sure about dummies and shields. Official word from an AD on the steering committee.
