I have applied for a head coaching position and have a friend who is on the school board there..... I was talking to him and he said one of the questions they ask was in relation to "program building"..... Do any of you guys know what he is talking about? Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd bet this is a question concerning the total package. What are you going to do to improve, not only the on field success rate of the kids, but their knowledge of what it means to be a young man. How to behave in the classroom, the community, and with women for example.

I would assume he means, what are you planning on doing to grow the program and make it successful. To answer it, I would start with what do you (and what do you want your program to) stand for? What do you consider a success? Are you trying to win state titles, trying to grow numbers, trying to impact kids - all of the above and in what order? First answer what your non negotiables are for you and your program. Go back through here and see what some other coaches are dealing with in terms of problems from the kids, from the administration, from the parents, and decide where you stand. What will you be willing to lose your job over? This examination will help you define what you and your program have as non negotiable standards. Next, have a plan to build the program. What can you articulate as your plan to reach your goals without giving up your standards? Lastly, what are your benchmarks as you progress through the next five years? These are the steps toward success that you expect your program to work to achieve in each time period you set up. And these are the goals that you will judge your programs path to success against. If you can clearly and effectively answer these in an interview, and the school then hires you, not only will you be hired into a situation that you helped define, but you will have helped set the standards you will have your emlployment judged upon. I think a program manual or outline should answer all of the program building questions.

Yes I understand that but what in your opinion would be the information they are looking for? General categories to consider: I. Philosophy (including Goals, Objectives) II. Recruitment-retention III. Player development IV. Public Relations (including dealing with parents) V. Organization VI. Evaluation In my interview portfolio I included a statement of philosophy, outline from our parents' meeting (which includes program goals and expectations), and a sample calendar. Could include offensive and defensive philosophy, practice schedule(s) and conditioning program too if requested.

If you don't know how you want to build your program I don't know if you are the man for the job.
I was on a hiring comittee a few years back for a new head coach.
I wanted to know the canidates Philosophy of his system offense, defense, special teams. I wanted to know what scheme he runs, or wants to run.
Weight room, off season conditioning, camps,
what he wants to see from the bottom up, from the youth, jr high and Jv programs. The over all vision of the program and what he intends to do to keep good numbers and give the school the best chance to win year in and year out.

coachbreck,
what i am getting at is the fact that "program building" could mean different things for different people and i asked to see what were some of the thoughts from other people.
i do know what i want to do but I wanted to know the others thoughts.
