i'm a young coach (27) with 2 yrs experience in elementary football, 1 yr freshman, and going on my 3rd year with the varsity. my question is:
1) what are your expectations for your assistant coaches?
2) in your mind, what makes one assistant stand out from the rest...in terms of moving that coach to a position with more responsibility i.e. a coordinator spot?

1) I look for hard workers. Guys that don't get bent out of shape if asked to do something.
2) Guys that have a thirst for the game. They look for every oppurtunity to gain more knowledge.

I like very smart coaches and players.
smart coaches can do more work then those who are not smart. I like math and science coaches as assistants because they think differently. they think very logical and sequential.
I like oline coaches to have some fire in their bellies. I say this because oline kids tend to be the big shy guys and they need a guy who is caring and has some passion.
I coach the qbs but if I had a guy coach the qbs I would want him to be like me. I am not a yeller. I am very calm. I think when you coach qbs you have to be calm. yelling at them does not solve the problems and erodes their confidence.
I do not like talkers. we are here to work. if we want to chew the fat lest do it over beers down at the local tavern.
I want my DC to have some passion. defense IMO is about effort and passion or as my dc says alignment, assignment and execute the offenses ability to function.

You have to get coaches that want to continue to learn football and that have a passion for teaching. You want good teachers because then you know that they will put in the time and know how to relate the information to kids. The other big part that many of us forget is to have guys that you get along with. That is one critical point because you spend so much time together and you better be able to like each other so then you can always be able to answer and hear things you might now want to.

It's important to be smart, but getting along with everyone and working hard are probably more important. A hard working guy who doesn't have enough mental ability to grasp the games won't advance.
But understand that it won't matter one bit how smart, how hard working, how good a personality you have-if you are not loyal to the HC you're done.

Loyalty and committment to the "direction" and a willingness to research.
One that offers "ideas," "alternatives," but doesn't take offense to a "no."
One that asks questions for clarity
One that takes his role seriously and believes his "part" is the most important "part."
