I am at a school where there has been no prior booster club whatsoever, just a student funds account, which is like pulling teeth just to get money out of. For those of you who started from scratch, what direction did you take in establishing a well run booster club? Ex: Opening bank account, tax paper work, etc... Thanks in advance for any help.

I would start by looking at several diffrent booster clubs in your area. Get a copy of their by laws, visit a meeting. I think the best way to do it is a situation where you are the President of teh club and the board is made up of people you choose. This will give you the most control and keep the naysayers away.

From being around some really good booster clubs I would have to say that you do not want to be HC and booster president way to much conflict of interest and responsibility. Have the by-laws written where the HC is part of an executive committee or something similar like that. I will see if I can dig up our by-laws and pass them on.

I would definitely choose your own president, make sure you select a parent who is on board with what you are doing for the first year and who gets along with other parents and will be able to get them on board.
I have heard of coaches who have their wife be very involved in the booster club so they have a strong ally on the inside at all times. I don't think my wife would be interested, but it's something to think about.

Here are some key points I would consider:
- The head coach should have an ex-officio postion. The by laws should call this out and you may to include these two key controlling factors for this position:
1. Final say in spending decision related to funding of equipment or stipends for staff.
2. The ability to force the resignation of Board Members whose conduct is detrimental to the FB program.
- You may want to consider a structure in which Booster Club board postions are held by Alumni Parents. No parents of active players on the board. They can run committees and fundraisers, vote, etc. Just not be board members.
- You'll need a base of influential parents. Better to start with Sophmore and Freshman who can commit to a few years of getting this off the ground. Also a handful of committed Alumi parents. Alumni parents guide policy decision. Underclassmen parents plan fundraisers, open their wallets, and supply labor (team dinners, mercahndising, as sales, etc.)
- Start with the end in mind! What do you want from your boosters: Fundrasing Goal, Types of Fundaisng, Duties (team dinners, marketing jr, football camp, as sales, etc). Be clear of what you expect from them.

I agree that the HC should be part of the board or be written in your by-laws as decision maker in the whole process. I do however have to caution against having boosters contribute to coaching salaries. I think that is a bad idea, when the parents start "paying" coaches they feel like they have more of a say and major problems can arise out of that. I have seen it a few times and it is not pretty.
Our boosters have an election for Pres, VP, Treasure and Secretary every year we have had no real problems with anyone in the offices since it's usually the involved parents who get the offices, not the trouble makers who only show up when it suits their personal needs.

Make sure the club gets it's tax exempt staus and is seperate from the school. Some school boards are passing rules about booster money, forcing it to be put in a school account. You DON'T want that!
