Hello everyone Is anybody planning on going to the Notre Dame Coaches Clinic this Friday & Saturday? I personally am looking forward to observing practice and seeing Brian Kelly's practice tempo in action and seeing how I can tweak that to a high school practice. I am also looking forward to hearing Ed Warinner, Mike Elston, Chuck Martin and Steve Specht speak.

My brother is there now. In between all the clinic stuff, he is sending me countless pictures from his phone from a place he has had on his bucket list to visit since we were little kids.

I was at the camp this weekend as well. It was my first opportunity to attend something like this and I really enjoyed it. The practice was VERY high-tempo, something I was impressed with. Mike Elston was the highlight of the clinic to me, as a defensive coach who focuses on the front 7. He is a fantastic coach.
I thought some of the presentations were a little dry, but overall it was definitely an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for me. Anybody else got anything?

I was at the clinic this weekend. I was very impressed with the entire operation; everything was first class. I was very impressed with the practice tempo and the speed at which things get done. I was also impressed with Coach Diaco...it is very obvious that he is one of the best out there.
I truly enjoyed the fact that all of the speaker presentations were put together ahead of time and put into a booklet for all the coaches ahead of time...great idea

Kelly's staff was first rate..almost too first rate..can see at least three of his guys Elston, Diaco ,and Martin as HC's at that level soon.If he can keep that staff together and get a QB and some more studs(like that #9 inside receiver?wow!) he will be successful like he's been everywhere else. weakest guy for me was the QBcoach/OC. THEY SURE COACH EVERY SECOND OF PRACTICE, EVEN WARM UPS.
Best talks were less about X's and O's and more about how to build a winner and philosophies if you like that kind of stuff.

I enjoyed the clinic. Brian Kelly is one hell of a speaker. I was realy impressed with the tempo of practices. The energy level between this staff and the previous staff is night-and-day. Especially on defense. I enjoyed hearing Martin, Elston, Lenti from Mt Carmel and Kelly. I know it is still wayyyyyy early but I think they may struggle on offense unless their o-line improves. The defensive line seemed to have their way with them during 1 on 1 and group work. Overall though, it is a first class clinic. Its nice that they give you a book with all the clinic outlines in it so you dont have to take notes, nice bag, shirt, socials & food. It was worth the $

Anyone able to upload the clinic outlines they handed out? Thanks Chris I am in the process of scanning in some pages from the clinic book. If you want all the presentations in the book they handed out, I know they use to sell the book if you contacted their director of football operations

About the size of Nike coach of the year clinic books. Tons of fundamentals.

Topics? How thorough are the articles? Any diagrams, etc.? I heard Chuck Martin speak in Indy a year ago and thought he was a great speaker, and took pages of notes. I guess I'm wondering if the content would be worth the price, or is it just a good supplement for those who were actually attending?

dacoachmo,
Thanks. I've become a regular reader of your blog since I discovered the many pleasures of coachhuey. Really appreciated the boot pass out of spread. I kept trying to run it like waggle, but running it off hitch is a great idea.

Having driven up from MD, I thought the clinic was good but not the greatest. I will say that Kelly can talk! He could find a way to me that the sky was green and the grass was blue. He's just smooth! I thought it was well organized and ran well. I wish they worked in a time for lunch on Friday. I didn't want to sacrifice hearing any one and I had to. I agree with kylem about their offense. I like Crist but I feel Kelly's offense might look different with him in there. And after Crist there is a drop off. Montana is not his dad! Defensively, I felt Saturday's practice was slow for them. They seemed to be teaching more. But the intensity was definitely on the offensive side of the ball with Kelly getting on everything wrong... which was needed.

I am still in the process of scanning in pages or typing up notes but here is the overview of Chuck Martin's talk from Friday. If you ever get a chance to hear him speak do it.
Team Philosophies by Chuck Martin, DB’s and Recruiting Coordinator:
1. Be a great teammate a. Care more about the guy in the locker next to you then yourself b. Eliminate the personal agendas c. What are you going to do today to help your teammate be successful?
2. No stars a. You are nothing without your teammates and staff b. We and our, not I and my c. Outsiders shouldn’t be able to pick out your best players at practice based on how your coaches coach everyone
3. Accountability- ties everything together
4. Leaders are born, not made a. Challenge them everyday b. Create suffering (opportunities to rally around each other) c. Play your best on best d. Being “cool” and “accepted is not always the same as being successful
5. Developing relationships a. It doesn't matter what level you're at as long as you strive to be the best at your level b. The better your relationship, the more you will benefit from being demanding c. Coach-player relationship should be a reciprocal or give-and-take relationship.
6. Create sacrifice situations a. Explain when they are making sacrifices and why they are doing it b. We are teaching them “it’s ok to not put me first”
7. Being realistic a. There is no need for coaches to say “we’re going to go out and dominate them every play etc.”, you only have to be 1 play better than the other team b. Don’t over-exaggerate “if this happens” we will lose scenarios
8. Process over product a. In tough times, keep sticking to your plan
9. Best prepared players play a. You can still go winless with a ton of talent if they are not prepared (miss practice, meetings, etc.)
10. Coach being immune to momentum a. Momentum is only momentum if you acknowledge it b. Point out the facts, not perceptions

I was very impressed with the clinic. Brian Kelley and staff were very hands on during the practice, and during chalk talk discussions. I had the privilidge to sit in the session with Coach Diaco, and man that guy can talk some football. He will be a HC very soon, very soon. I think the thing I was most impressed with is the fact that although I did learn some new things, it was the fact that the fundementals even at that high of level still remains the number one priority. Not just relating to football fundementals, but life fundementals as well.
Brian Kelley will right the ship. I was skeptical, but the "proof is in the puddin." He has won everywhere he has been, and he has done it with preaching fundementals.
I loved hearing him speak about how the kids had a sense of entitlement when he got there, and how they wouldn't even park right. How the lockerooms were dirty and the weight room unorganized. He is rebuilding the structure that has been broken down by years of mediocracy, and it just amazed me that even at Notre Dame the kids still need that disciplinarian to crack the whip. Amazing stuff!
Can't wait to go see Greg Schiano next year!

Even if I probably won't be able to ever attend a clinic like this one, I wonder how much does it cost? And what are you allow to do/see?

best bang for your buck, as far a clinics go. I went with 5 other guys and paid 50 bucks. My 50 bucks got me a tour of the lockeroom, an adidas bag, a t-shirt, a manual with all the clinic presentations, a full day of listening to excellent coaches, two nights of beer and pizza, and two notre dame practices.....well worth it

It was great! and I paid the walk-up fee of 80.00. Got to see some old friends/players too!
I wonder if this staff will be more welcoming than the past? Would love a sit down with any of the Offensive staff!
