I do not know if this topic has been discussed but if not i would like feed back if possible. For those of you that have spring ball, what do you look to accompolish? Is your primary purpose to teach fundamentals, techniques, or installation of your offense and defense?

This year we are going to try and increase our numbers. We are going in with the mentality of "try us on for size". We know basically who we have back for next season, and who we don't, so that's not the big issue. We desparately need to increase our depth. We are going to do very little conditioning if any at all (that usually runs the linemen off real quick) and try to do as much competitive stuff as possible. We are really going to treat it like a long camp session. The no conditioning may sound soft, but the last 2 years in a row we've started with over 85 kids and seen those numbers dwindle to around 60 before the end of spring ball. We are also going to encourage the weight room as much as possible, we seem to lose a bunch there as well between spring and fall.
As far as what we do offensively and defensively, we try and get the basics in, and try to get as many folk a look. It's hard with a limited staff, and new kids and all, but we really work to get these guys a look. In our spring game, we play 3 varsity quarters, and 1 JV quarter to allow the younger kids a look. We do 0 special teams in our spring and intrasquad games during this period as we are looking at just getting the basics down on offense and defense.

The primary objectives is to establish the foundation for a successful 2010 season.
Heres what we focus on;
1. Indoctrinate players in developing the mental approach that we want our team to exhibit on the football field; efficient, fast, intelligent and physical.
2. Get as far as we can with our installation schedule. Varies yearly.
3. Solidify indy skills and fundamentals.
4. Compete; every practice, 7on7, team camp, and scrimmage.
5. Get the right personnel in open postions. This continues to pre-season two a days. But we get it pretty close and see people in potential spots.
and have a load of fun doing it!

Fundamentals is number one for us. We are lucky enough to have an athletic PE 7th period all year, so during March and April we spend about a day per week walking through and installing our basic scheme.
We like it because kids go into spring having an idea of what they will need to be able to execute. We can focus on getting better at the techniques needed to make the scheme work, instead of where to line up, where is the 4 hole, what is a 3 tech, etc.
