I was fortunate enough to speak at the Mizzou clinic Friday and got to hear Coach Tressel speak a couple hours later. He spoke on their Buckeye pyramid they do each year. It included some great team building and character building ideas that I thought were amazing. It was refreshing to hear someone with such a passion for developing young men as well as winning.

Tressel calls it the "Block O of life". If you get his book, "The Winners Manual" it goes into detail as well as has a section at the end of each chapter (that focuses on each block) with questions to ask yourself and your players. I love it!

Bottom three rows filled with importants ideas learned by team in three book studies they were assigned in the spring. Bottom row based on book "My Dream Map". Next row based on book "Lone Survivor". Next row based on book "Uncommon". Next row listed 7 phases they had been through in offseason to get to season opener. Next 3 rows listed key game situations they had prepared for that they had to be good at to win. Next row listed senior jersey numbers (only 3 blocks on that row so there were several numbers in that block). Those seniors during 2adays had to explain to the team what it meant to them to play for the buckeyes. Next row had 2 blocks: Gratitude and Humility. Top block: Combat Ready (everything underneath that block made sure they were ready for the game).

The book study changes each year depending a lot on what he thinks his team needs. He said they usually include a John Maxwell book.

Coach Tressel did a really good job, wish Coach Pinkel could have been there.
The Buckeye Pyramid changes each year -- the bottom of the pyramid delas with topics form books that each class reports on. Last year the books were "My Dream Map", "lone Survivor", and "Uncommon"
The next several blocks are situations that come up in games. Examples include: first play of a drive, tempo, unbalanced O + D, red zone, sudden change, turnover margin, "last play of the world".
Each situation is emphasized in a practice - including presenting cutups, stats, of their importance.
The top three blocks are traits - Coach Tressels' for last year included Gratitude and Humility and then Combat Ready. And at the top of the pyramid was the goal of being #1 in the big ten and nationally.
I can see why he has been a successful coach at different levels of football- very good presentation.

Intersting thing about the important game situations. If they are going to practice short yardage that day they will show some video prepractice of a historical short yardage moment to emphasize how important it is when they practice it.

Jim Tressel is probably the most under-rated highly-successful coach in CFB history.
He has really got it all together.

I have to agree with you blb. Even though I really dislike the Buckeyes as a team, I really appreciate what Tressel has done at Youngstown State and Ohio State. From how he goes about recruiting players to recognizing why he coaches. At the NoVa Nike Clinic, he talked about building young men, not just winning games. And unlike other CFB HC's, he seems more sincere about his duty/responsibility to the young men who go to OSU.

Now, the pyramid you guys are referring to... is that different than his "Block O of Life"? It seems like there are some similarities but I have never heard it described that way before. In his "Block O" he has it divided in two parts: Goals and Purpose. The Goals are on the bottom and include: strength/fitness, football/family, academics/career. These are things we can deal with on a daily basis. But the purposes deal more with defining who we are as people. They include: personal/family, spiritual/ moral, caring/giving. And within each purpose or goal are other areas they deal with. This does not sound like the pyramid you guys are referring to. Correct?

This one was called the Buckeye pyramid. I think it is unveiled to the team just prior to the first game to remind them everything they have done the last 8 months to prepare for the first game.

Examples include: first play of a drive, tempo, unbalanced O + D, red zone, sudden change, turnover margin, "last play of the world". Is "last play of the world" like a hail mary deal? Cal-Stanford lateral play? Boise State circus play?

I've never been a big Buckeyes fan, but the more that I read about Tressel, the more impressed I am with him. It is this kind of attention to detail that sets great programs apart from good ones. He is a class act.

read his book, came across as a first class guy.I dont like the concept of the block O of life as it sounds silly, but this sounds more akin to John Woodens Pyramid.

I think the example he gave was of a defensive stop on the last play of the game. He said when they get in that situation you can hear the players on the sideline yelling to the defense, "Last Play of the World!"

Coach Tressel is a class act all the way and not just because I am a buckeyes fan but because I have seen it first hand....
The perfect example from a coaching perspective is at the buckeye spring clinic and at the state coaches clinic, when he is able to be there, he is in the front row for every speaker taking notes. I heard him once get up after a high school coach talked and asked the guy to stick around because he really liked what he had to say and wanted to get more from him.
He really is a guy who wants his players to get more out of their college experience than just waiting a few years to get to the league.

Doesn't surprise me.
As Gene Smith noted, if you've read The Winners Manual For The Game Of Life by Tressel, you'd understand.
He has a very well-thought out, faith-based approach to everything. And yet he is measured and open-minded at the same time.

I'm glad there is someone who is decent enough to do what he did. I think it's important for his players and his fans to see this; to see how you're supposed to treat others different than oneself.

I haven't read the book yet. It's waiting on my kindle. I don't know a ton about Tressel, but that single quote has lifted him pretty high in my eyes.
