My college coach passed away a few days ago and it really got me thinking...we have all heard about Mangino, Levitt and others etc and thier boorish behavior...most times these posts/articles mention that times have changed....you can't do that stuff anymore etc...the thing is I am old enough to have played in those days. I can not ever remember my hs coaches (a couple of vietnam vets) or my college coaches EVER swearing at or putting down a player...oh there were hard on us ..no water....etc..but never that other stuff..how about you older guys....what was your experience
BTW were were pretty good..we won or shared 4 Yankee conference chamionships in my 5 years there
Rest In Peace Coach Pickett, you did it the right way

Well said Coach Gordon. I'm a young coach but I think you hit the nail on the head.
Sorry to hear about your old coach.

I got the same news just earlier this year. My 7th grade DB coach (best coach that I ever had) passed away a few years ago in Kosovo. I didn't even know. I never took the opportunity to say 'well done' for the amount of work he put into making me a better player and person. My 7th Grade DB Coach: www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,360004,00.html

My high school coach did not allow us to swear. Now he would not give us water in practice (This was in the early 1990s) and he would not allow us treatment or to miss drills for little things.
My OL/DL coach would have us bend over and he would kick us right in the behind if we screwed up (this guy was so old he played minor league baseball with Willie Mays - there is a picture of the two of them). He would say - I am going to give you a 10 1/2 with a twist.
My college coach was very, very demanding, physical, scary, tough and intemidating. He would get in your behind (He actually jacked me up once - I am 6'3" 275 lbs..). He would not really swear at us but man he really go after it and would really push us.
I personnally thrived in this environment. I liked it when coaches told me what I could not do and how terrible I was. I really would respond to this - I took this as a challenge. But then again I did not grow up in a half million dollar home with a silver spoon in my mouth either...
Hearing some kid whine about being in a shed... Well you can guess what I think of him....
