What is happening in your program that has you excited about the 2010 season?
This may be bragging, but I prefer to consider it "I am so pleased/blessed/fired up that I have to share this stuff!" We are graduating some really quality seniors this year. These guys really helped to establish our program through their work in the weightroom, and they will be missed. However, even in the middle of basketball/wrestling season, I am seeing and feeling enthusiasm about the 2010 football season growing already. For example, a freshman lineman cleaned 200 lbs. for the first time this morning, and a sophomore lineman cleaned 235. These guys are just busting their tails in the weightroom every day. We have a freshman wingback who squatted 315 at the end of his workout earlier this week. An 8th grade running back (6', 180 already) cleaned 200 lbs. this week. Our juniors all look about 10 pounds larger than they did during football season. I could go on and on with examples, but this one probably sums it all up the best: I had twelve 8th graders in my zero hour (6:45 - 7:30 a.m.) lifting class this morning. The class is for my freshmen and sophomores who can't fit one of our lifting classes into their class schedule and they get PE credit for attending, but our 8th graders are so hungry for high school football that they asked if they could start coming in even though they won't get any credit. It started with 3 of them, then grew to 8, and this morning hit a high of 12. There are at least 2 more of them who will likely be in next week. I am also coaching jr. high track this spring, so I will get to work with this great group of 8th graders.
The enthusiasm is definitely contagious!

To be honest, ours had been lacking a little bit. However, we got a huge donation (as in FREE!) of weight room equipment around the semester break and we have had a full weight room before and after school since. I heard a sophomore who currently cleans about 225 declare "The clean record is going down!" in the hallway a couple days ago. Not quite your level, superpower, but we've had a few pretty enthused 8th graders in the weight room too.

Yeah, and it was pretty much everything we needed--new benches, inclines, and power racks plus machines for flies, leg curls, leg extensions, dips, rows, and even a machine for pullups I'd never seen before. We were fortunate in the fact that a part-time gym owner decided he didn't want to own and run his gym anymore!

Our numbers (attendance) is better in the wt room than a year ago.
The number of kids squatting over 300, and 400 pounds respectively is up.
The number of kids power cleaning 200+ pounds is up.
All five starting OL are returning.
Those things make me think 2010 will be better than 2009.
Nothing is perfect and we are not without our problems but I am fired up for next year.

I have my whole staff coming back and dont have to teach any of them what "3 tech" or "trap" means. They all believe in man to man coverage and so do my players.
I have 17 returning players including two wings, a fullback, two tackles, a te, a center, maybe a guard, and my top two qbs....., we ave about a dozen or more incoming freshmen, jv football is back and every kid in the program knows and believes in "wedge".
we turned the "moms club" into TOUCHDOWN CLUB and its growing to include the club decorating lockers on game day, promoting specials for businesses around town on game day, student specials on game nights, thursday night pre game meals and more.

After being pushed into retirement by my previous school, I'm just glad to have a job.
Seriously, at my new school we have solid nucleus of kids who have been in weight room every day working hard, have supportive administrators, have been able to hire some good coaches.

I installed the same off-season program in December that we had for 5 years at a highly successful 3A program. The kids are starting to catch on! It has not been easy, but that is half the fun of it.
When you take over a down program that has not been winning, has not understood the importance of weights, has not had great discipline, and has had problems with commitment, there are little battles that we coaches have to fight every day. I am convinced that laziness and apathy is a disease that must be extracted from a lot of young people today! We are doing our best daily to get it out of them! Some leaders are starting to emerge, and some "nuts" are starting to drop! Its about time!
A few who don't want to work that hard have left the program. We don't miss them. We will test after next week and will see strength gains, etc... The most important thing we have gained from Phase 1 is mental toughness. Its always been inside of each of them, but most (I'm finding out) have never been pushed (or pushed themselves) to get out of that comfort zone.
The rock music is jamming every morning, and we coaches are moving around acting like big cheerleaders. If we can continue to get more to commit, we will have a chance for a playoff spot this Fall.

The Good:
My T/DE is 6-2 240 runs a 4.8 and is going to be the best player in the league this year with the best attitude in the state. If he doesn't get a scholarship somewhere he'll be joining the Marines. Kid is better than solid in the class room. The kid was in our lowest level classes going into his freshman year and will be taking honors classes next year. The kid you want your daughter to bring home.
My G/3T is 5-8 and a solid 250+ is the most explosive kid I've ever had. He will win all five events in our league weight lifting championship. Made high honors and is a terrific young man.
We have a great returning secondary. Both safeties are returning starters and our nickle moves to a starting corner. We have incredible depth here... Could have five or six kids play the last spot and be set.
We have a very good backfield two starters returning and the other averaged 15 yards a carry on JV.
I get 3/4 kids on my DL back.
We are no longer a co-op. We used to have to get on a bus and go to a dilapidated urban school to both practice and play. Used to practice on a dust bowl and took second fiddle to another team game night when deciding who got to play Friday night. Co-op wasn't ideal as it gave us one starter in four years yet added like 600 boys to our enrollment (Class A up into Class AAAA... Easier to recruit when you don't have to take a bus to practice every day for sure. More team spirit when you're rooting for your actual mascot etc...
We'll (hopefully) have a great field: the stadium/turf field/lights passed both the bond referendum and P&Z and it is a pretty awesome set up.
Recruiting: Has been going very well. Lots of kids didn't want to go to the other school. Everyone who I wanted to go out over the last few years but didn't has sought me out about playing next year. Some real talent from all three returning grades.
The bad:
We lost 15 seniors who were all starters and led us to a one loss season and got to the semis. Including the best RB, WR, & lineman in the league. Can't replace that.
I lost 4/5 starters on O and next year's projected starters are not their equals with the exception of the second person I mentioned above.
Weight room attendance is down over where we were last year. Seeing about 75% attendance of people not playing basketball or track instead of last year's 95%.
Probably won't have equipment in time for spring practice or have a field in time either as a lawsuit prevented it from being finished already and no idea when it will be done with.
Have 0/3 LBs returning and only two JV LBs returning. Not sure how this is going to work out...
Don't officially have a HC yet as the district is dragging their legs about posting the position which is required even though it is all but certain the program will have the same staff carried over from the co-op.
No booster club yet.
The ugly:
I can't wait for football to start up again. =)

Went 7-3 last year and to the second round of the playoffs. Return 18 starters and 11 three year starters (Qb, RB, OL/DL..)
Return a 1200 yd rusher - QB rushed for a 100 yds or more 5 out of last 6 games..
Did I also say we are averaging 65 - 80 kids in the weighroom..
Have 6 players returning or were either first team or 2nd team all district..
These players are also our hardest workers. We are very excited!!

My wife brought home a new kitten 12/30. She named it BLITZ. She said it reminded her of our team - running as fast as they can with no idea where to go.
I am very excited that we were finally playing at full speed - Still trying to teach the where.
Basketball ended last night so the bulk of the team hits the weight room in the next couple of days and the weekly QB camp starts tomorrow. I am pumped!

We just bought the video software from hudl, we have kids watching film in Febuary at the comfort of their own home. We put notes on plays and MY BACKUP qaurterback sends me emails into the notes we teach. My LB wants to know when we are going to put up notes
My head coach has 34 kids going to a weight meet, we had 40 finish the season. Things are going very well.

We are most excited about our max gains overall in the squat, bench, and clean. The kids are now really buying into what we are doing, and many have gained tons of confidence.

Weight room attendence is high. We made it to the state championship game for our class last year and the kids know it was a direct result of their hard work last year. They are hungry to get back and their work shows it. The amount of gain in lifting totals and lean muscle the kids are putting on is pretty exciting to me. Our running back weighs 190 and three rep squats 515. He also benches 300 and cleans 240. We have at least 8 kids three rep squatting over 400 and at least that many cleaning over 200. We are a small school, had 29 players this season, with a small weight room, but the kids get the most out of it. Had all players in this morning for a 6:15am workout. Great attitudes working hard and they love it when the workouts are a little extra difficult. I am spoiled to have such a great group of kids.

Superpower, that's awesome we have a small but dedicated crew in the weightroom, we have one of our guys that will be a 1,000 LBs clubber if he does well testing before spring break. we have about 12 guys who couldn't bench press 95 lbs before Thanksgiving who are now repping 165 for sets of 8-10, and squatting 185 for sets of 10, which considering they didn't know what a sqaut was 4 months ago aint bad. I got a freshman LB who is gonnna be a monster, runs from what I heard a 4.7-4.6 40 and has been teaing the weightroom up. Reminds me of Adam Archuletta or Dallas Sartz( I believe that was the USC OLB that was famous while Bush and Leinhart were at USC) as far as build and athletic potential.

We have one more day of max outs in my zero hour class this week. I give them 4 days to get in their 3 maxes - squat, clean, and bench. Next week our older kids will max out in their lifting classes. Looking forward to those results, but here is what my zero hour kids have done so far. By the way, the 8th graders have only been lifting for a few weeks.

Had a rep out competition day last week and it was pretty good. We put 185 pounds on the squat had them do as many reps as they could. We kept track and it turned into a good competition. Had a dozen kids get over 30 reps. We actually had one kids get 70 reps and one get 75 reps. Yes, I made sure they were parallel. All of our kids are two way players and I want to know what kind of muscle stamina they have. Needless to say I am pretty pleased. These are also the same kids who lift over 400 pounds on a three rep squat, with one guy over 500 (190 lbs. running back/linebacker) We did the same thing with bench with 135 lbs and had a lot of guys doing over 20 reps. We had 3 guys do 37 reps. These are the gusy who are doing 290 and 300 maxes in the bench. We only do this rep out competition once a year.

I am excited cuz I might actually be involved with my old high school this year! My brother is coaching there now and is keeping me updated on everything they are doing, and even asks my advice on things (which is great for me considering I havent coached much and he was a DC for 6 years).
The only position I may have as of now is running the film for them in the fall as they are gonna be using the DSV, and I'll be damned if not learning a video program is going to keep me away.
The team seems to be making great gains, as the school has completely turned into a basketball school. The players are learning how to work hard again, which is tremendous, so Im pumped that I might even get to be involved.
