Hi guys it looks like we will be in a situation this year where some of our players will need to play both OL and DL. This is a new problem for us.
How do you do it? How do you you structure team time & individual skill?

Coach, we have Monday as a review from previous game/ intro to this weeks game. We kind him of send him back and forth, we will cover the front etc. than send him to the defense, they send him back if need be. On Tuesday we do offense, so we will have him all day Tuesday. Wednesday is defense focus so they will have him all day. Thursday is similar to Monday, sending him back and forth as needed. It worked pretty good for us, as we had a few two way linemen that did pretty well.

From an individual drill perspective, if you working one on ones, or 2 on 1s etc. it is pretty easy to keep both sides of the ball covered. In team time, you can either look at half side sometimes in terms of execution, or utilise alternative personnel to 'fill spots' when scheme learning to ensure a full front or full line in opposition. This happens on occasion in our youth leagues.

I agree having 1 on 1's or 2 on 1 drill will benefit both positions and we have them rotate during team time for half offense and half defense.

I know I'll be in the minority here but I am a really strong advocate of having everyone have both an Offensive and Defensive position. I can't imagine having players play just one way. This is something I've fought my HC on since I've been where I'm at. Until this past season he fought back and most kids were only one way players at a very small school...
In my eyes all of your DL are also OL (We'll have a heavy LD kid with some other issues who will only be a one way player while he is here) and the few who aren't play defenders during daily offensive indy.

If you are looking at having two way guys, schedule an Indy right before a skelly period, that way as skilled players get their normal 20-30 min. of Indy and then break to Skelly, Oline/Dline guys can then do one on ones.
One day is a defensive emphasis day so indy D is 20 to 30 min and skelly is 20 to 30 min. depending on your system and then when it is an offensive empahsis day then indy d is 15-20 minutes and Skelly is the same. And vice versa for offense.
Starting last season with 14 players, we had to do it. This year, however, we will be looking at 40 to 50 players and may be able to platoon. Probably not possible with only 4 coaches, however.

That's how we did things last season because of the number of linemen that we had. My HC tells me this year that we are going to have our linemen play only one side of the ball. This is great in theory, but we are an arena team so we only use 3 linemen on OL and DL. The problem is that we have roster limits and after the HC accounts for 7 DBs and 7 or 8 WRs we only have room for 7 linemen. As far as our practice schedule it is mostly individual drills because the linemen "get in the way" during passing offense periods. We also did this last year and it didn't work well because our QBs had a false sense of the time they had to get a throw off and where their windows would be during practice that did not exist during our games.

I always find that having OL learn DL and vice versa is really good for their 'primary' position.

Jaime, that is a very interesting post. Are you saying that the windows were shorter in duration or longer. I am assuming the former.
