I have a question, a kind of study I am conducting.
Out of the total number of Varsity football athletes you coached each season, How many of the athletes participate in your off-season work outs?
This can be broken down into the following categories (because athletes are usually in another sport);
Winter months
Spring Months
Summer Months
And to take that a step further, if you break it down by the above three categories, what type of off season program are they doing? To gain muscle, Endurance, etc.

Winter months 100%- We have weights class/Ath.period
Spring Months 100%- We have weights class/Ath.period
Summer Months 100%
And to take that a step further, if you break it down by the above three categories, what type of off season program are they doing? To gain muscle, Endurance, etc.
Basically... we lift, do agility/speed work, plyometrics... pretty much the same year round, though different times of the year have different programs/emphasis. We do football specific drills in spring and summer.
"Endurance" is more or less limited to muscular-most of our endurance is weight room type activity (we have 6 weeks of very high rep sets... set usually takes 1.5min). We do this twice a year (for 3 weeks each as a Base Phase in our program). We also have a 4 week body weight workouts (push-ups, abs, etc.) that is based on the P90X program. We don't really run for endurance...most of our running is sprint work.
About 80% of our guys are at least 2 sport athletes (probably 60% are three sport).

Winter months: counting everyone who works out even every once and awhile...10-15
Spring Months: again, counting anyone who puts in even one day...15-20
Summer Months: counting anyone with at least one day of attendance...40-50
Our program consists of the same thing 95% of the time: warm-up, squat/bench/cleans/deadlifts, followed by a light amount of abs every once and awhile, and then plyo's or light sprint work. In the summer we work on football specific drills after our workouts. (I don't condone this setup, just telling you what we do.)

The vast majority of the kids are in pe or wt training class so that gives them about a 2/3 participation (we dont meet often enough for them to make all workouts) and then many of those kids disappear all summer and lose whatever they have worked for.
I have a small core of kids, maybe about 25%-35% of my roster that get close to 75% of the workouts.
We can do better, I have more parents supporting the idea now...at first kids just thought they could show up and win. 2-6 has changed that idea.

I guess I should add to the survey, if you will, is the success rate of your football programs

Our kids that are in winter sports are lifting with in the winter sport in-season program, and the same in the spring. Kids who are not out for a winter sport are expected to lift with us 3x a week. 9-11 right now we have 21 kids not out for a winter sport. I'm not a big fan of what our Basketball and baseball coaches do for strength work, but we are not allowed to make the football players out for a winter sport lift with us.
I can tell you that if you look at our record boards and top 10 list, etc.... the kids names that you see are the kids who are all-conf., all-area, team MVP, etc.... so there is proof in the pudding that hard work and strength training will increase success rate in sports and football.

We have our players in athletic periods spread through-out the day. All FB players work-out, except on their game day in their other sport. Period. No exceptions. Kids will resist it at first, but see the benefits on their other sports and quickly gain an appreciation for working out year-around.

Everyone lifts all off season. We have a lot of two or three sport athletes. JV lifts no matter what. Varsity lifts unless a district game period.

We do not have athletic pe or athletic period during the day. We a small school the needs the players to play mulitple sports. However, we still get close to 100% participation year around. We always find the time. Usually early morning.

Hey, I think I heard something....sort of like "HORTON HEARS A WHO"....
an 8th grader said to me today "MY MOM MAKES ME COME LIFT, SHE WANTS ME TO START"
Now, this is really something. not sure why...but it is...

Winter: With weightlifting class and multi-sport athletes I'd guess about 75% (Including JV and Varsity)
Spring: We eek up a bit all around, closer to 85%.
Summer: We drop some JV kids who can't get rides (rural district). Varsity wise we are at 100%, JV's are close to 90.

Winter: 0 %
Spring: 0%
Summer 0 to 5% (If you count going to the gym and shooting 3's for an hour)
Success rate: We have won 9 games in 9 years, six in one season. Wonder why?

Real simple - 1. Faith / Family first 2. Academics - 2nd
Football had better next (or close). Here is what does NOT fly in our program: 1. Work - Does not matter. Schedule work around football (they do it for school..) 2. I am grounded - Yeah ok.. What are you in first grade.... 3. Grades - Study - I have study hall and track our players grades. WAY better solution then what parents have.
Last fall we had 25 players get a 3.5 or higher and won 7 games.
Expectation is simple - YOU WILL BE APART of this.
If not - you are gone.
Our weight room averages - 60 - 80 kids a day.
Baseball, wrestling, B-ball (we have about 30 doing them) well they lift 2-3 days a week in-season and follow and in-season routine.
So in our program 100 % participation. If not - we just kick them out.

Every one of our football players are required to go through off-season workouts during the athletic period. You don't just show up in August wanting to play football. This is the backbone of a lot of great programs. This is your chance to get those kids stronger, quicker, faster, more team-oriented, more disciplined, and most importantly, mentally tougher. I coached for two very successful programs in West Texas (one a 3A program, and one a 4A program) a few years back. We didn't always have the overall speed and athleticism as your teams from the Metroplex, Houston, or East Texas areas. So you have to build players in offseason who will fight you tooth and nail in the parking lot, if you know what I mean. When the legendary Odessa Permian was so dominant in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, it was because of their off-season program and their mat drills more than anything. Alabama under Bear Bryant did a lot of the same things. If you've never read Friday Night Lights, you need to read it. There are some references to the offseason program.

Off-season for 2009: We regularly had 50-60% of our players in the weightroom winter, spring, and summer. We did speed work when we could get outside in the spring and worked on football specific stuff spring and summer. Our 2009 record: 0-9
Off-season for 2010: I have been disappointed so far in our participation in winter workouts, basically we have 30%-40% working out. I am in the process of addressing this as best I can. I would LOVE to have the numbers to only play those who attend our sessions but when you have about 30 total players its hard. WE WILL GET BETTER!!
