For two years, going on three....I have essentially had to battle a "nemesis" in the community. Hes not been very supportive (ie completely undermines everything I do and works my kids, their parents, the admin including the ad, principal, super and school board) - hes fairly relentless and I am afraid that hes continuing to work the room so to speak. In any case, how many of you have dealt with something like this, particularly if this individual is the type to throw lots of money at boosters or the rotary club etc. Heres an example of things that I have had to "fix" in my program star ms kid player told that he will get hurt and will lose his football scholarship because we "dont have" jv (result, kid doesnt want to play until hes a senior) senior kids told they wont get playing time because they have jobs and cant practice all summer, only the "bums" will get playing time kids "worked on" in the community and their parents worked on "you should be playing quarterback, that kid should be a guard" etc etc kids being told "you need one hundred hours of community service to play for this guy" heres my personal favorite- our fb had an injury but decided to run on his own to stay in shape, this guy told some middle school kids "look, that coach makes you run when you have an injury" I could go on and on. Sadly I think he just wants the job as hes got a kid in the program. You know the type.

I would smile and wave at him every time that I saw him. He needs to feel and know that you are a happy/hard-working guy that is not concerned one bit could about him or what he thinks. Try throwing some of this psychology on him. It will blow his mind.

Yeah, hes not someone that really knows football in my opinion, he is however a home grown member of the community and has his chums who would like to work with him etc.
Its not even him, its what he does to the kids parents and how it effects the kids, including his own that bother me.

I would agree that you try to use some psychology on him. That is a tough situation coach and I feel for you. Obviously he has a lot going for him, community support wise, but i agree that you should just try to act as friendly and professional as possible anytime you see him.

I have the same thing...... sort of!
Parent coach in our organization his kid plays QB they attend all the camps he even runs a passing academy here in the city where he hires a pro QB to come in and teach fundementals.
His kid is a great kid pretty athletic but not a great QB loosk good until it is game time or scrimage or skelly then he likes to throw the ball to the other team. His dad was my biggest supporter until I moved the kid to WR we needed him there and he is great there. He was our top WR most TD catches most yards the works. Dad is still pissed and insists I made a mistake. In response to all of this his dad attempts to have me removed as coach and lead a parent revolt. We made it the city final.......................
I have tried to mend the fence the organization has released the kid on the grounds that the situation is not salvagable he has fought this and won one coach has lost his position over it and now I get to deal with it again.
The solution for us is simple we will keep 3 QB's this year if this kid is not in the top 3 he will be released based on that.
How it will end I am not sure I like to think it will be amacable.

I think of a "nemesis" in a little different light. I thought that you would be asking about a guy that coaches a cross-town rival or something. Hoping it would be that.
In any endeavor there is always the so called "expert in the bushes" I always say. No matter what your profession there is always "that guy" who knows more than you. The only problem is that he never does it.
It's always the "local Joe" youth coach that knows more than you, now he never gives himself over to putting it all on the line. He'll have another job to feed his family, but he certainly is better than you...or so he tells everyone.
This kind of person is a rebel. A rebel always knows has a better idea. But beware, if he ever gets the position, he ends up destroying everything. Always knowing better, but never taking the chance to put his family on the line to take the job.
I can't stand people like this. You see the same thing in chuch, there's always some clown that thinks he's a better preacher or leader than the pastor. The pastor, the actual guy who puts his life on the line, who moves his family across the country, that has devoted his life and his family to the cause of this church.
But this guy, this clown, this rebel-thinks he's better. No, these kind of people never last, they never succeed.
Comes with the territory.

In order to head off what you are referring to, I had a series of once a week meetings and advertised it in the local paper inviting anyone and everyone to come and "Let's Talk Football" at the field house meeting room. It was a big hit and it did not take the "experts" in the community long to figure out just how LITTLE they knew about the strategies, X's and O's, S&C, schemes, adjustments, etc, etc. for the sport.
It really did them good, opened some eyes and gave them a new found respect for what we do.
We discussed anything and everything that they wanted to talk about about football. I not only let them throw any question at me, I also threw questions at them and gave them opportunities to show their knowledge. At times is was comical to watch some of the "experts" try to carry on an intelligent conversation. Some came for all 8 weeks, some came once and never showed their face again.
I will say that some came to legitimately learn the game, but the intent of the series was for the "experts" to get a wake up call.

You haven't been coaching very long if you haven't upset someone. Make sure you are doing the right things for the right reasons, develop thick skin, and drive on.

I wouldn't go that far, but remember, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer". That's a great quote, and one I've worked to my favor numerous times around here. Last season we went 0-10, and last year we were 1-9 so there are a lot of naysayers around here, however some of them are now caught in a catch 22 because of the role they play in the program, or support they've give etc. There is very good truth in the above quote.

bpederson54, we never talked about personnel, period. It was all about offense, defense, special teams, strategy, adjustments, fundamentals, technique, Strength and conditioning, speed development, etc, etc. No one ever tried to argue although some would watch some NFL show or something and try to trip me up, which never happened. Honestly it ended up being very well received and let the people know up front that I and the staff knew what we were doing and could function at a very high level. That was my first season there when no one knew me. Over the past two years we have have gone 23-4-1 with two conference championships and a state semi finals appearance this past year.

Why is it that our profession is damn near the only one in the entire world that people think they can do a better job than we can? We're all teachers as well, how many parents have you had call and want to discuss how you're teaching the Battle of Antietam to the kids or how you're teaching binomial factorization?
Everyone is an expert in football aren't they?

Maybe you should feel lucky that you've only got one nemesis.
I've got at least four guys like that running around undermining. One is the previous head coach who was fired for stealing and is now on the school board. One is an influential father whose son showed up to practice drunk. One is a local guy who didn't get the job. One is an influential member of the town council.
The ice under me hasn't even frozen yet. I could sink at any moment.
I think about three quotes from Lou Holtz all of the time -
"Time wounds all heels."
"You don't get ahead by getting even." And
"Don't wrestle with pigs: You both get dirty, but the pig likes it."
