Have any of you ever wrote a football realted book? What are the pro's/con's, is it worth it? What is the income from a successful book?

You need a publisher which means what you write has to be some good stuff... has to be a demand for it... you do not want to go and publish your own book... does not work.

I just literally had a book published by coaches choice..I got my author copies 2 days ago...It's called coaching the under front defense...it was a lot of work and definately worth it for me.. For me..the pro's were IMO..it really chrystallized how I taught...Ialways knew the stuff..but now I had to say it ALL in a single voice in a way that EVERYONE could understand... It is pretty cool to see a book with your name on it...The cons...if you are writing a book just to make money, you prpbably will be disappointed....although I would like to make money..I really wrote the book for myself..to give myself a challenge..see if I could do it.. more cons..it's alot of work..I loved writing most of it..but there were some sections that were tough...but you are on a deadline so you have to get it done..another con IMO was I was deathly afraid of making mistakes..spelling ..grammar..sematics...I was lucky that I was able to get a couple of guys I really respect to literally read the manuscript word for word and offer true constructive criticism... The income you recive from a successful book is really up to you...the publisher gives you a royalty of 10% of what they sell the book for....so if your book sells for $20 to the public..I imagine the wholesaler gets it for $7-8$..10% of that is 70-80 cents..hardly a get rich scheme..however they will sell you the books at a great discount...now its up to you to sell the book on your own..you can make some money here maybe $10 a book...so if you hustled ..i dunno how many books can you sell?
pm or email me if you want

I have considered writing a book on Jr high kids, when I first took over as the Jr high coach I searched for information books, video's etc, In the end I found a lot of stuff on youth, which seemed to apply more to 8-12 year olds, and then stuff on 16/17+ there is not a lot of information reguarding the kids going through maturity and effects football can have on them. How do you keep the late maturers in sports? How do you help the immature kids interested in lifting weights when they see the guys around them getting stronger while they are not? How do you deal with the Jr High kid going through puberty? How much weight can a prepubescent kid lift?
If I do ever write a book, not sure if it will make money but it will help me put the thoughts in my head in line. Hopefully it will help me if/when I become a sr head coach in explaining to the jr high staff what I would expect.

Just had the first of three come out in November from coaches choice. It is called 101 Single Wing Plays. the process took about a year and was like said above worth it as i does make you really refine your stuff. I didn't do it for the money, although it might be nice if it goes big. They just had me out over break to shoot videos so they might do well too. I am writing the second book now and it is a lot of notes and scraps of paper to create the document but I still need to take the photos and create the diagrams so it might take another couple months. If you are passionate about coaching and have the desire it might be worth it to try. Coach Lewis

In my opinion it's one of the best resources available right, now.

Saw this thread later, sorry to pull it up again, but I thought I would mention that we have a mechanics book is on its way. Actually, it is C4/R4/F4 in one book. The goal is to bring the same value as the DVDs through a different medium that we know will encourage and assist coaches in training their QBs. We are shooting for early Spring, but definitely before summer.
The working title of the book is,
"Cracking the Quarterback Code: Unlocking the Skills(C4), Decision Making(R4), and Preparation(F4) Process of a Winner."
The core is completed, we are just in the imaging and editing phase. Still a ton of work to do, but I thought you guys might be interested.
We aren't looking to replace the DVDs or anything, but rather to create a visual and effective aide to what we did with the DVDs.
Should be fun.

Glad to hear this. I prefer books in many ways to DVDs just because of how portable and such. Now the next questions is When will E4 be out? When will the R4 drill tape be out? Will the book have the R4 drills that are not on the R4 DVD in it?

E4 is still in the works, needed a year to vet out the concepts and make sure they were sound. Also, with the economy, we have really had to focus on the core business to survive.
R4 advanced tapes are coming - after the book.
R4 drills will be in the book as well - some of which are not on the tape - yes. New ones since the tape was done that we are doing.

In 4th grade I wrote a book about how the Chicago Bears saved Santa Claus using the 46 defense. Does that count?
