Looking at building lockers for the locker room, the open access lockers to replace our old-school lockers that don't fit much equipment anyway. I have priced them online and they are very expensive. Just wondering if anyone has built their own? If you have please share how you did it. I was thinking about 18 in wide and 18in deep. Would simple plywood do the trick?

The only thing I would worry about is wood being sealed with polyurethane because moisture from sweat and water will rot it quickly. Also do you think plywood is going to stand up to the wear and tear of players throwing equipment into them day in and day out? A harder wood would probably make for a better material, like Oak. You can also use a nice stain and make your locker room look professional. Maybe price the materials and account for the time you'll need to build them. Then decide if it is worth it to go the D.I.Y. route or shell out the cash to buy them.

We were going to do the same thing...unless you are good with that kind of stuff...it might be better to buy. I was pricing things out and trying to find dads to help and came up empty handed with allot of lost time. We still have the same old crappy lockers that don't even shut all the way.

We built our own lockers with plywood and sealed them properly. The main key with the moisture problem is proper ventilation. If you can, check to see if you have enough air movement, then the wood lockers should be fine. Our shop program makes them for us and we just need to supply the materials. Each locker need one 4X8 sheet of 3/4" plywood, and is finished with stain and Thompson's Water Seal.

Do you have any pictures of the finished product? Also what are the dimensions of the whole locker?

That's what I was going to say, get your shop class to build the lockers . If you're using 3/4 inch plywood, with good cabinet making and finishing techniques, those things would last for a long time.

The old school I was HC at had homemade lockers and they were great. They did get a little banged up over time but they held up great. I will try and find a picture.
