Think it was the Dallas San Diego game.
Cowboys get a TD, but they're still down by 3.
2 seconds left in the game.
Cowboys now kicking off.
Is there any possible way the Cowboys could have won? I say yes.
But the Cowboys coaches called the standard onside kick (kick, on the ground, about yards 10 down the line)...which, I think gives the team no chance to win.
So wondering what you coaches would have done?
(For the record, not looking to bash any team, or talk NFL, just looking to dissect a situation.)

I think Id have wanted a bit of a pooch kick that went over the front line and bounced around somewhere in an area where we might have a chance to recover. Hard to say, didnt see the game.

I watched that, I think I would've done the same thing. 2 seconds isn't much time to do anything.

What's the trick? Kick it high into the air so that a Cowboy can catch it and have it down before the clock starts?

If the ball doesnt hit the ground then the other team can fair catch it right?

If the ball doesnt hit the ground then the other team can fair catch it right? Yes, the receiving team can make a fair catch on a kick-off. We work on that every week of the season.

I think you need help from the return team to make a mistake...needs to be a catch (not a fair catch, first mistake), run (2nd mistake, he should just fall on the ball), and then fumble (not muff) that the kicking team recovers and returns for a TD.
A one in a million chance...but, still a chance. Kicking it on the ground, even if recovered by the kicking team, is going to run 2 seconds off.

In HS the ball has to hit the ground before the kicking team can recover, not sure if thatis a pro rule also.

In all reality they butchered the end game scenario beyond all belief. With 30 seconds left, you have to kick the field goal, they were on the 18 yard line. Then you onside, hope to recover and still have a few plays to get in the end zone. Unless they signed Kathy Ireland from "Necessary Roughness" to be their kicker it didn't matter where they recovered the onside, it was going to be a hail mary situation. At least kicking it with 25-30 seconds left you leave yourself down 7 but even with no timeouts you still have a chance to go down and score to force OT.

That is what I would have done, McCarthy at Green Bay did it earlier this year and some questioned his logic, it is the only chance you have to win the game.
