cannot win
just saw this sign in the navy locker room on cbsc show---inside academy football
what is your take on this? how do you deal with---players that are "robots" or players that are afraid to make mistakes?

I think that is an awesome take. I have always been told that if kids are afraid to make a mistake they are not always going to take a chance on a play time the snap. I have tried not to punish a kid for making a FULL speed mistake. I tell them to go full speed and not half butt effort. there is a difference from being stupid and trying

My first coach used to say: "if you have to make a mistake, do it with all of your heart"

We tell our kids that mistakes are going to happen as part of the game, but if they make a mistake, we expect it to be at full speed and we expect them to learn from it and move on.

I got a completely different message than you guys seemed to. I took it as the risk not being making a mistake on the field, but rather being putting yourself out there knowing the risk of being beaten. I feel this is more along the lines of what touchdownmaker was talking about in a different thread. It takes courage to do everything you can to win, and still be beaten.

I agree. You have to step outside of your comfort zone.
also.....
could be related to the 'type' of kid found in the academy setting: able follow rules (to a 'T'), show discipline, answer to a higher calling, being part of a team. etc...... Sometimes you have to teach those types of kids 'how to let it all hang out'

One more applicable to the "now generation" would be one I read on the facebook page of Lee Ziemba, Auburn's LT: "I don't care what you're doing, DO IT FULL SPEED! Very true statement. Just like popular slogans Just Do It, Go for the Gold, etc... Kids need to play to win, not play not to lose. If you are afraid to take some chances in life, you will never really accomplish much of anything that is great. The same statement can be made for coaches. Luke
