Your season just ends in a tough semifinal playoff loss. You have the following options: 1) Take a few weeks off and enjoy the great season your program had 2) Get to work immediately, making sure you know why you were beat and ensuring it won't happen next year 3) Start making wild accusations that the team that beat you used sharpened tongue depressors to slash at and cut your players during the game. You also call the head coach of that team's state championship opponent and let him know your suspicions. You also make sure to contact the press so that an article about your allegations will be published the day of the state title game. Anyone want to take a wild guess about which option Greenville High School in Illinois chose? ;D www.bnd.com/breaking_news/story/1026607.html

That's pretty sad but...wasn't there a story a few years ago where a kid had sharpened his helmet buckles or something else to almost be like a razor and kids on the other team were all cut up. This story sounds crazy about the tongue depressors but ya never know....

The helmet buckles- I get Tounge depressors- the kid makes the tackle, slips the knife out, slashes the kid and then slides it back to its hiding spot all while the officials and other players are nearby to catch him in the act? Doubtful.

Yeah we used to do that all the time. What's the big deal???
WHAT THE HEY!?!
Wow if that really happened then the kid who did it should be criminally charged. If the coach made it up then that's just bizzare. Who thinks of using tongue depressors?
The helmet buckles have been done several times...

Tongue-depressors? That's just weird. I know this is from the bad old days of football, but there was a team we played every year who was known for taping sharpened object to themselves. Know a number of guys who were cut by this. Razor blades were the preferred object. But that was long ago, nobody does stuff like this anymore-we are much more enlightened and people have gotten better and better. OJW

I've seen tacks taped to the palms of gloves, sharpened helmet buckles, steel strips taped to forearms, metal in the knuckles of gloves...there are lots of weapons to use and there is no way the refs can see any of it unless they are deliberately looking for it. I've also seen the damage they can do. Scary stuff.

I think in this particular case, film would out it pretty much right away. If there's a crew of 3-4 kids out there shanking people left and right, you're not going to be able to hide it. That or they're VERY good at hiding it and should consider becoming ninjas.

Greenville is where I went to high school, and I coached the Freshman team and assisted with the Varsity last season. I was surprised by this story, but knowing the coaching staff for over 10 years I doubt they'd just trump up a story like this. They're all high character guys and have never used excuses for losing a game. This is the same team that didn't play a single home game last year because our field was being re-built and we set the Illinois state record for most road games in a season (9 regular season games and 3 playoff games) and never used the excuse of always being on the road for poor play. The popsicle sticks were used by Unity to clean mud off of their cleats and is something they've done all season. It's possible that one or two knuckleheads would think to use them for something other than their intended use, and I don't believe for a second that using them as weapons, if it happened, was sanctioned by Unity's staff. I can see how it's a bit of a stretch, but I don't think it's impossible.

This has been buzzing locally for over a week and it is kind of sad that it was published the day that team played for the title.
From what I understand a few Greenville players wound up with several cuts in there jerseys and scrapes on there bodies that didn’t appear to be from fingernails. The all state QB had an 8 inch cut on his back that lined up with a cut in his jersey that started in the front. It was a muddy game and the tongue depressors were used to clean mud from the cleats. After finding the tongue depressor and knowing about the tears and cuts the AD jumped to the conclusion they were used on the field. I doubt they used them on the field. If any thing happened it was an individual not the team. I just like how the coach blames an internet site and drags two schools he beat into the conversation after they reported no foul play. If there is evidence on film I’m sure it will come to the light. Sadly some damage is done to that program evidence or not.
On a side note. We played a team that we thought had a FB that sharpened his helmet buckets and we had some kids with some nasty cuts. But the ref looked and saw no foul play. Cuts happen but I think the amount of reported cuts in this case raised suspicion.

maybe its just me. But how does a wooden tongue depressor cut through the jersey material? Not the cuts on the body but the cut in the jersey itself? Keep in mind they were using them to clean mud out of their cleats which will dull the edge of the depressor.
More importantly how do you not know you are being cut by a wooden object? Especially if its as bad of a cut as they make it out to be? Again it would have been dulled after being used for cleaning mud out of cleats?
i'm not saying it couldn't happen! i'm just sayiong i can't see how it could!

I would up the ante here to be honest. It would not be hard to have turned those supposed weapons over to the police, asked for DNA tests from those who were cut to see if any of their DNA was on the depressors.
If not, then I would bring a slander suit against the Greenville coach for purposely and maliciously attacking my character. all I would ask for is 1 dollar and an apology in writing and a letter to the editor apologizing to our program.
This should be handled in private not talking to the newspaper.

That would be tough to bring a slander suit to the Greenville coach since the newspaper broke the story and the coach wasn't involved only the AD. I don’t particularly care for either of these schools and I didn’t think much of this story, but I have seen the picture of the kids back and I have never been cut like that in all of my playing career... but I wasn’t getting tackled either.

We had a player get cut bad enough in one game he needed 16 stitches and missed 4 weeks for a cut on his arm that almost cut through the muscle. We had a few others get cuts in that game as well. All we can figure is someone had a bent buckle on their helmet or pads.
