I know GSU has a good history and tradition, but don't know anything about the situation there currently. What did he inherit that was so bad? Had they changed their academic standards?

I wonder how much of an effect Paul Johnson's success up the road at GT might have had. This could totally be a "system is the problem/system is the solution" situation, where they are seeing their old Header having tremendous success doing what he used to do at Statesboro, while they have been right about average since the triple option left.

Unless there was some underlying reason, like they'd made their academic standards tougher, or been on probation, or lots of players left when he took over...he'd been there 3 years and shown no improvement. 7-4, 6-5, 5-6. Whether it's right, or prudent to do, 3 years is about all you get these days, and in the absence of some other circumstances, should be enough to show you have things turned around and at least headed in the right direction. At a place like GSU, they've had success, and expect it...they're probably not patient.

Hatcher's nose sure was out of joint with respect to his final statement to the media..He wasn't brought in to 'turn the program around', per se, no matter how bad his predecessor left the program. The program was the top of 1AA for a very long time; people expected him to come in and bring it back to championship form. 5-6 isn't going to cut it.
Plus, any statement made regarding the 'school's academic standards' affecting the football program are not going to be taken well by the powers that be...Especially when the 'exceptions' have not been graduating....

He was still playing a lot of option type players. Saw them play on tv a few times, but they didn't seem to be doing much.

Sorry to see that, wish he could have had more success, but hardly a surprise. Ga. Southern is used to a lot of success and with Paul Johnson's team doing so well, the native are restless. Don't like it, but can't really blame them.
They "grew up" with option ball and it's hard to change that. Something the school should have considered before they hired Coach Hatcher is that he was not a flex-bone coach.

Funny thing is that, in looking at the GSU message boards, most think that Hatch got a raw deal. They want instead for the AD (Baker is his name, I think?) to take a hike. Apparently the handling of this didn't go very well, at least to the message board guys, some of who are donors to the program.
