Who is still playing?
How many games is your regular season?
How many rounds are there in your state playoffs?
We play 10 regular season games (the highest classification plays 11).
Our playoffs are 5 rounds, so you would play 15 games to win the State Championship.
We are in round two of the playoffs, week 12. Sorry I haven't been jumping in and contributing more this week but I am swamped and exhausted...but loving every minute of it. We are on a 9 game win streak with home-feild advantage all the way through...gotta make the most of this.
Any thoughts on making the most of a playoff run, keeping the kids fresh. Tricks of the trade to maximize your playoff chances. How much to taper practices? Things to keep practices fresh. We have a JV bowl on Wednesdays during the playoffs at the end of practice and the guys really enjoy that. On Thursday nights we eat a big meal at one of the parents house. We have cut out Sundays with the kids to help keep them fresh, we just get it all done during the week. The coaches are getting a little break because we don't have the long paint night on Wednesday anymore as the lower level coaches get it done while we practice.
A lot of times it is not the best team that wins the State, but the team that still wants to play. How would you make sure that was your team?

In Michigan we have 9 regular season games and then up to five additional games to crown 8 champions. You need to win 6 games to make it into the playoffs. (A few 5-4 teams will make it as well.) You've hit on so many keys there. Keeping kids excited, especially the 2nd team kids who are ready to move on to other sports. Understanding that kids have only so many "HITS" in them, and minimizing contact where and when possible. We are practicing with 80 kids. 12 of those are kids from our JV and freshmen team. The rich get richer I guess. On Mondays we have occasionally taken time to let the 2's play the 2's. That was really a lot of fun - and it did give us a chance to really look at next year's team. We play 10 regular season games. In our region we need 5 wins to win the state championship. In our state until the state semis the playoffs are regional. There are four regions and each decides how to run the regional playoffs. Some only take four teams. Ours takes eight because ours is has the largest number of schools.
We don't change practice much. I think that if we did the kids would wonder if we were taking things seriously. We're cutting down on conditioning. We're emphasizing keeping practice tight and fast-paced. Other than that we don't do much different.

7th Grade Middle School Football
We had an 8 week season, but only had 7 games after one team refused to play us after we hurt their QB the week before.
We went 8-0 with the forfeit.
We gave up 30 points this season, all in the first 2 games. (Thats 24 more than we gave up last year)
Scored around 28 a game.
FB/LB has a great future, good kid, student, and good football IQ
Oline looked good, should get better with time and as they grow. We were 5'6, 5'6, 5'10, 5'10, and 6'1 across the line with a 5'11 backup guard.
QB went 3/4 in one game for 200 yards and 3 tds, would have been 4/4 but we played in a mud bowl, and the ball slipped when he threw it. Not bad for a 7th grader playing in the Wing-T.
This was a great group, and it was a blast coaching them. This is our second year in a row going undefeated on the 7th grade level. The team that did it in 08 went 7-1 in 8th grade this year.

In OK the top 4 classes play 10 regular games and 4 rounds of playoffs. The bottom 2 classes play 10 regular games and 5 rounds of playoffs.
Have 2 8-man classes also, that play 10 regular, 4 playoff rounds.
As a side note, Shattuck HS just set the national 8 man record with 91 wins in a row!!!

Regime change has been a smooth transition...going from one former Byrnes guy to another. Most of the staff stayed together. O and D stayed the same. Most of the traditions carried over. There are things that have changed and will continue to change. PM me and let me know where you are.

We play 10 regular season games with up to 3 playoff games. From there 8 teams are chosen to compete for the state championships in the small, medium, large, and open division where the open division is the 'official' state champ. It's an interesting system because of the way that all the nor-cal and so-cal teams have to assess if they have a shot at making the state game and then accumulate power points and jockey for the selection. Kind of like BCS-lite.

HS (small... lowest classification; 8 man)
8 games in regular season (used to be 9... I liked that better)
5 playoff games to win it all. (so... 13 total)
We have about 130 schools playing 8 man (2 divisions)
We lost in the second round. Game went down to the wire.
We have about 75 in HS.
RE: Playoff run, for years we had 5 days between games. This year, we had 6. It was a BIG help (too bad we couldn't take advantage of it more). We did everything the same as usual (1 day off rather than 2), but did condense practice quite a bit.

CA, 10 regular season games, we have 11 weeks to play 10 games. You can start early(formerly called week 0) and have a bye during the middle of your season, or you can start a week later and play 10 games in a row.
This friday is our final regular season game. Playoffs here have 4 rounds until the section championship is crowned (up to 16 team bracket for each division, if less than 16 teams qualify then the top teams get byes til 2nd round)
CA no true state playoff... they just pick a section champ to represent norcal and socal in the state game

We get to play either 9 or 10 regular season games, then it takes either 4 or 5 playoff games to win state depending on region. We have 3 regions, so one region essentially gets a bye each year. They start their season 1 week later than the other 2 regions, so when the other 2 regions are playing first round playoff games, the 3rd region is finishing its regular season. The region with the bye alternates each year.

2 Scrimmages 10 Game Regular Season (In 11 Weeks) 6 Teams make the playoffs in our Region (Top 2 seeds have Byes) Regional Quarters (Seeds 3-6) Regional Semi's Regional Championship State Semi State Championship
So playoffs can be 4-5 Games
I would think that keeping things consistant at practice is the best practice.

A jamboree 10 regular season games (this includes 3 district games) The top two from a four team district advance to regionals sectional round quarters semis finals at the dome
Towards the end of the year and through the playoffs, we try to scale back on a few things. We want to follow the same routine, but we just shave minutes off here and there. Nothing too extreme and we want to make sure there isn't a wasted minute (I have to admit, sometimes around week 5 our practice bogged down a little). We don't kill them during conditioning and we don't pound on each other as we do heading into the first few weeks of the season. We try to really focus on fundamentals. I've felt that teams I've seen in the past, late in the season, really start to slack in their practice of fundamental blocking, tackling, ball-handling, etc (little things that can grow big in a hurry). I try to make sure we focus on fundamentals, scheme, and continue to "do what we do".

I have always been felt that you don't do anything really different for playoff week than you do any other week. Monday is a Monday, Tuesday is a Tuesday, etc........ Just chop wood.
We do shift our focus a little in that we can pull up the lower level kids for the playoffs. We have 84 jerseys, but will have around 110 at practice. If you aren't a starter or a senior, you have to battle in order to dress that week. We also, use some of the time as development time. The underclassmen we need to step up and replace people get extra attention/reps when we can. Of course our freshman coaches help us with that.

This season, eons long.
Mathematically,
3 scrimmages 9 reg season games 1 consolation game if not in playoffs (us) 3 playoff games to win state
We are at the consolation game/1st round of playoffs this week.

2 Scrimmages 10 Games 3 District Playoff Games (Potential) 3 State Playoff Games (Potential)
Season Ends Dec 19th if you go all the way
In PA that means some cold games and practices
As a basketball coach it is nuts

In NC we play 11 regular season games. Than we spilt the high schools up by ADMs (attendance numbers) into 1A (smallest), 1AA, 2A, 2AA, 3A, 3AA, 4A and 4AA (largest). We have 3 rounds than the championships. The championships are played at NC State, UNC and Wake Forest. So, we crown 8 champions in NC that have played 15 games. We are just starting week one of the playoffs this Friday and will finish up on December 12th with the championships.

Well, my season just got a week longer. Haven't been posting much but I'm still reading everyday. We just advanced to the 3rd round. If we win this week it would be the deepest run in school history to my knowledge and we would be playing in the upperstate championship which is our semi-final. Working my tail off to do everything I can to help the cause. Good luck to everyone else who is still playing!

Situation in our County in Germany: Lowest Division (only regional teams): 6 Games, possible relegation tournament, final-four type
Top Division (12 Teams across Germany): 6 Division Games, max. 3 playoff-games, all three 4th seeded teams in their division will play a relegation game against the regional qualifier.
Division 2 - 4 (only regional): 8-10 games. Winner of Division 2 will play regional qualifier against winner of neighboured County. Qualifier will play relegation game against lowest-seed team in their region in Division 1.
Leagues 2-4, all Division Champs relegate up, and all last-placed Teams relegate down, without a game.

In all classes except 11AA (our biggest classification): 1. Eight game regular season. 2. Four regions per class. 3. Top three in each region automatically qualify for playoffs, then next four in power points are in. 4. Play three rounds to pare down to two finalists, max of 12 games; finals this year were Nov. 12-14.
In 11AA, they play nine regular season games, then seed the top 16. #1 plays #16, #2 plays #15, etc. They play them off in three rounds before finals, so they play a max of 13 games.
