I think less is more. We typically have about 30-33 on our varsity. Ours include -
Black Lion MVP - talent based Falcon Award - Character and Leadership Block of Granite - Lineman Award Iron Man - kid who never comes off the field Hammer - best/biggest hitter Rookie of the Year - for a young kid Special Teamer - excels on special teams, non starter on O/D
That's 25% of our team. Everyone else earns their letter and the Seniors get "Mini Helmets" with their name and # on it.

Our organization gives quite a few awards and I feel that they do a good job with it. Remember this is for a youth league.
MVP Best O lineman Best D lineman Best Offensive Back or Reciever Best Defensive Back or Line Back Coach Bloom Award- Character Award (Has to have played all years)
The one award I would add would be a most improved award. I also wish that I had a say in the awards. Our board made it a rule that the players vote on the awards, except Coach Bloom. I guess it's to keep dads from playing favorites.

We give out any all-league and/or all-state awards, and the only team award we give is the BLACK LION AWARD (http://www.coachwyatt.com/blacklionhomepage.htm).

we give away some silly awards like smelliest uniform, cleanest uniforms, those kind of things. Scout team player of the year to honor the kid who busted his butt the most on scout team.

Anyone do most "outstanding" player instead of "valuable" ?? Some people don't like to "value" any kid over the others.
As far as funny awards. We called our freshman awards "The Slappys" and gave out:
Slappy of the Year (and we made him captain for the game) Most likely to throw your glove 50 yards and the ball only 10 when we call 38 toss pass Most likely to get hurt every practice Best injury (which went to me, and I got "booed") Most likely to question the color of the sky Cutest Couple

We have between 30-40 in our program 9-12 and we will do:
Team MVP (Sometimes Offense MVP and Defense MVP) Lineman of the Year Scout Team Player of the Year Big Hitter Award Coaches Award ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At my alma mater we did it like this
Team MVP Coaches Award Golden Helmet Award (Best Defensive Player) Jack Castilogna (legendary former coach) Award (High Achievement both on the field and in the classroom) Paul Kelley (former player) Leadership Award Touchdown Club Superfan Award (usually goes to a senior's parents who have done alot for the program)

jdcane - be careful with your slappy's. My Boys Basketball coach tried to play standup last year at his awards. Even though he said some truly nice things about each kid, the only thing the parents and kids "heard" were his zingers. He's a great coach and he truly loves his players, but as AD, I was cleaning up the mess the rest of the year.
Award Programs are for congratulations, well dones, and thank you very muches. Stay away from gag awards, regrets, making statements, or sending messages. Those are better served at the team party, not the awards program.

We have a Samurai Award - given to the player who goes all out all the time and sacrifices himself for the team.

The only individual award we give at our banquet is the Special Teams Award and it is a 4 foot tall trophy meant to be outlandish. It puts a Special Emphasis on Special Teams. It is awarded based on a system of points devised by Brian Kelley when he was at Grand Valley. Something like this. ezinearticles.com/?Coaching-Football-Special-Teams&id=915787

don't forget about everyone's favorite award.....the POPA (pissed off parent award) we put gentlemen's wagers on that one every year, and no matter how successful the season, there is always one.

I am opposite of most the coaches on this thread--- at our awards we recognize those that were voted all-conference and all-district - we also recognize those who made honor roll during the season. but we do not have individual awards just for our team -- in my thoughts, football is the ultimate team game.
I also agree with fbdoc - watch out on giving gag awards - somebody is not going to be happy - if we gave a "best couple" award I would be looking for another job. Our volleyball coach gives silly awards and fbdoc is right - it can be a pain for the AD/principal...
and calicoach is right too - no matter what you do some parent is not going to like it...
