I say the one that gives the defense the best look. I played scout team QB last year a little bit when we were facing a Wing T team because our QB's couldnt' figure out steps and thats tuff. OC yelled at me saying the kids needed the reps, but why do they need reps on an offense they will never run when we spend more time trying to teach the kid the play than actually giving our defense a look.

Our #1 (SR) plays it most of the time. When they have a run first QB our #3 (SO) plays it.

We got pretty lucky this year Our returning all league senior QB was ruled academically ineligible just before the season began so he is our scout team QB . Man are we lucky At least we get a decent look

Thats Me
Played at our High school at qb and wr. I have found that it messes with our regular quarter backs and their fundamentals to be running another offense with "Scout" level talent.

Yeah it depends. If they have a good all around QB and its a system like ours our starting QB will do it. If not he is our best look at receiever.
If they have a handoff / running qb our backup QB / WR does it.
But most of the time its me. It speeds up our scout O, I am still pretty good all around (did play some HS QB), I know their O and can execute it better with our scout that our QB, and I need the excercise!!!

I find it better to have a coach run scout qb. We don't just have the scout qb out there. At times it is an entire scout offense run by 3's sometimes 2's. Rarely 1's. They need someone there to get the look they are getting to correct them. Also, at times they need a kick in arse, figuratively speaking of course, to know that scout is important and if i'm back there sweating and trying to make plays they should be too.

Well, guess I'll chime in since I started it......ME! 295 lbs. OL coach. I about got my arm ripped off by a crazy 10th grade OLB yesterday! I love it when we get to run any kind of boot pass. I can hide the ball very well behind my large posterior.

Our starting QB does not start on defense, so he is the scout QB. Gives the defense a good look, and is better than most of the QBs that we face. We run our QB a lot, so he is used to some hitting. Also, although some might disagree, I'm the king of the quick whistle.

I do it if it is a scheme we are unfamiliar with. If it is close to what we do it is the backup QB. I am working my way back to 295.

We have a 295 OL Coach who plays the part. He offers the size of Jared Lorenzen, the running power of Tim Tebow, and the speed/agility of a William Perry. But seriously, he does a good job.

For those who use a coach- how does he coach while running the scout team?

Wow 295 scout qb! Yeah that would be a good way to hide the ball. I am down to 180 and figure not only in height and size that I am close to the QB so it is realistic. We used to have our O.Line coach doing it and it was hilarious, but not quite the most realistic look. After I saw Gruden simulating Gannon at Scout QB it just made sense for me to do it too.

1st team scout QB- young, athletic former TE of ours who can run & throw. He does not teach, so on the rare occasions he is not there, our #2 scout team QB is a young, um... athletic, (I guess) OL coach (who is a teacher). Both are former players here, watch a lot of tape and know how to do what we need done.

Usually the best QB available, unless they just can't simulate the look, in which case I have to do it or find someone who will. This year our main QB doesn't really play D, so I know that for most schemes, he's money, but we did have to pull him when we were getting ready for triple option. I really wish he would study tape of our opponents to do his scout job better, but I also wish he would lift weights, have a good attitude, and lead by example...

For those who use a coach- how does he coach while running the scout team? We two platoon so I only coach offense. if I had a position to coach on defense I wouldn't do scout team QB. today was the first time I've done QB all year, because our normal scouter got a concussion int he JV last week so we are down to 2 QBs and one plays Defense, we were running 2 groups of scout.

Me Head Coach Played OL in college I can sling the rock From watching tape I can give the defense the best look. That sounds like me, plus it gets our scout fired up and we give the defense a good look.

The oc and I will play qb or wr and sometimes both because of our low numbers. I grew tired of our third string center playing our opponents stud WR. Sometimes we will even play on the OL or DL because we are having a hard time getting a good look. The kids enjyoy it and it helps them prepare.

I will never have my starting QB as the scout QB. Early in my career I watched another team go through a situation that cost them their season. Their starting QB was lost for the year running scout team in practice. I understand that sometimes things just happen but I will never lose my QB because I lined him up behind a scout OL. I have him work footwork drills during D practice. My JV QB will usually be the guy.

We face a wide variety of offenses in our league. We do not allow the #1 QB to ever participate in scout O. Too many chances of injury and I don't want him thinking about anything but executing our offense. We have a full staff of coaches for both offense and defense, but we don't have enough players to platoon both sides of the ball. I usually play scout QB when our opponent's scheme is different than what we play. The scout O seems to give a better look when I am at QB. They have developed a little pride in protecting the coach from injury and it our defense has benefited from their efforts.

I play our scout QB as both are varsity QBs are also defensive starters. The only other QBs in the program are freshmen and Wednesday (our defensive day for varsity) are doing the pregame walk through as they play games on Thursdays. I'm about 5'11'' and weight 300, but can do the Wing T footwork. The kids have taken to calling me "Lorenzen" on Wednesdays.

We have a small squad so all are athletes play both ways. That means if we want to have a decent look it has to be a coach playing scout QB. It is usually one of the line coaches, we have two. This of course is with a 7th and 8th grade team.

I also liked having a coach get in there, especially if it was something for the kid to learn and we just had more knowledge of it. And the kids will get fired up by seeing a coach in there, mixing it up
