Is 20% participation about "normal" for a school?

We have 11%. We have to co-op with another school just to be competitive.

We have 8% of the male population out for football. I wish we had 10%! That is our goal is to have the right 10 - 12% of the boys come out for football. We currently have 97 kids in the program 9-12 with 3 levels of competition (Fr./JV/Varsity)
10-12% would mean 110-132 kids 9th-12th grade for us!

We have about 5% of the boys out.. 10% of whole population..
There are several (10-15 maybe) that could help us.. but.. they are tied up with other activities..
You try to get them out.. but I am not going to beg them.. and even if you do beg.. the first time they are not happy.. what leverage are you left with?
This is why we only have 3 jrs on the team..

My experience (head coach at five different high schools ranging in enrollment from 530 to 1784) is in area of 20% of male student population participating.
This year we had 147 young men (out of 681 in school) draw equipment, still have 138 out.

Hmmm I seem to be doing fine then. We have 24 boys 9-12, of course two of them cant play due to grades but we do have 24 out in a school with 130 boys.
seems to me that some folks seem to be grasping at straws with things to complain about around here. I always try for 20%. Id like to see 50 kids 9-12 but that wont happen without a big winning state ball type of season.

I thought 10% to be a good number.

In a school of 450 (boys and girls) we have 50 out for football 9-12. That is 11% of the school population and about 20% of the boys. Our goal number is 60 (15 from each class). We have 9th grade, JV and Varsity teams. Jv and varsity practice together.

I think it depends a lot on the size of the school. We are in MN's largest class with about 2200 students 9-12, and are at about 16% of the male population. I know of a number of small schools who are at 50% or better.

In Nebraska there are several small schools that have 100% of their kids playing. Howells has that number about every year I think.

I'm seriously begining to think that Nebraska must be a wonderful place. Every boy in a school going out for football is amazing even if you are playing in the smallest school in the state. I think my high school program, which was a co-op, had about 15-20% participation between the two schools.

We have 40 boys out out of a high school population of about 60 boys so 65-66% that's better than usual, but we're usually at least 50%

Conway Springs Kansas has 101 boys and 64 are playing football this season. In the 2002-2005 era Millard West in Omaha would often have about 250 kids out with a male population of about 1200- Suburban school OTOH same class as Millard West- Omaha South (inner city school) has about 55 kids out from male population of about 850. So 55 vs 250

We are a pretty unique situation, a huge school with 4200 students total, leaves us with about 2100 boys, but only about 95 in the program at all 3 levels. About 4% of the males in our school. I think a lot of this is attributed to large populations of students whose families are from other countries and are very unfamiliar with the sport (asian, indian, mexican). Program has been strong for quite awhile, but school-wide football is just not a big deal to many.
