May be a dumb quetion, but I am considering buying the book. How good of a book is it? Is it worth the money? Thanks.

Excellent. It's oriented towards the pro game but well worth reading for those of us who aren't going to be the next Bellichiek (or however you spell his name). As with anything it's worth is in the eye of the purchaser I see it's over $82 on Amazon but it is quite thorough and insightful.

How much money?
It covers program management, player management, game management, staff management, game strategy, personnel metrics, offensive/defensive philosophy, supervising, etc

Great book I got it through interlibrary loan, but I am still waiting for the price to drop to buy it, most of it is program management stuff but He does have a chapter about qbs that would be pretty applicable on any level.

Given the choice between getting Coaching Team Defense by Shurmur or Finding the Winning Edge by Walsh, which would you choose? I figure I'll read both sometime down the road, but right now I can only get one.

It would depend for me on where you are currently at on the coaching ladder, I think team defense is going to give you more knowledge as a young coach, but if you are leading a program I would check out finding the winning edge. I am a younger guy that will not have to deal with an owner or scouting department for a while so I didn't get as much out of the book as I would if I was in more of a management position.

coaching team defense. Walsh's book is a book much more on organizational behavior and dynamics than it is about football. He spends a good deal of time discussing things such as free agency (in its orgin, not even the current nature), the draft, office politics etc. He also spends a good deal of time discussing program organization and methodolgies....these are pretty useful, but in my opinion, ONLY in stimulating thought. Not very useful if used as a canned system.
Shurmur's book discusses the governing principles of defensive football. good for 4-4, 4-2-5, 4-3, 6-2, 3-4, 50, 5-2, Monsters 5-3, 3-3 stack...etc...
If you want to learn football, read Shurmur's book. If you are you ready to expand your mine about how to THINK about FOOTBALL ORGANIZATIONS,and read about all non x and o things football related, you will get something out of walsh's book.

I don't know about your areas, but in Phoenix, you can access books online through the Phoenix Library in PDF for free. Talk about sweet.....Walsh's book was a good insight into management and organization, certainly a good read.

Walsh's book was a good read but is very "Pro Oriented". I found it very interesting and took a bunch of notes..I an not sure how transferable the book is to HS football

An old HC I worked for borrowed it from me to read as resource for program management. Every chapter features articles Walsh wrote for Forbes as a columnist (when retired). The BEST parts of the book that are applicable for anyone not looking to become a GM can also be found in Brian Billick's "Developing an Offensive Game Plan". The book is one of a kind in gaining an impression on how Walsh's mind worked, but don't let the scarcity of this book make you think it holds some deep secret. Coaches could glean just as much value from books written by economists as they could from this. I agree with coachd5085's assessment here, with a side note; the poor man's version (for HS coaches) is "available" and is probably more practical...... I was lucky enough to have bought Finding the Winning Edge when it was in original print, and affordable. I don't think it worth hundreds of dollars. $50? Why not. I'm all for spending money when I think it is really worth it. But as brophy said it's not magic.
I endorse the Shurmur book, and that Warren book looks interesting.

It is a great boot but I dont know if I would spend hundreds of dollars on a book. I rented a copy of it thru inter library loan than spent 20 bucks photocopying it.
Walsh has a book that came out earlier I believe it is called "Building Champions" which I found on amazon for realy cheap (like 9.00 and I lucked out and it was SIGNED!) and it has a few chapters on program management although it is not as length or as in depth as Finding the Winning Edge.
