What criteria do you guys use in assigning letters? Do you use number of plays, percentage of plays, quarters played in? The HC and myself (DC) are trying to figure out a strong method in determining who letters. We don't want to give out a letter for someone who is only on punt team once or twice a game. Curious to see what everyone else does.

Here we give one to anyone who makes it through the season. We usually have around 35 on the roster. When I was in HS, you had to start 2 games on offense or defense, or play in 16 quarters.

We also give a letter to anyone who finishes the season on the team.
"Only on punt team"? Don't you consider that important?

If a kid goes to football practice every day and runs scout team or contributes by holding bags or whatever he sure as hell deserves a letter as much or more than a band member or member of the golf/tennis/cross country team!

i helped set a letter system up a few years ago at a small school......let's see if i can remember
letter requirements........50 percent participation in quarters, innings, etc......1 play or out means 1 quarter......much better than trying to count plays/outs.....even if the special teamer letters...
1st year letter winners....we gave an actual letter to them........most of them put it in a frame... 2nd year letter winners.....letter jacket............ 3rd year letter winners......large patch on the back of the jacket..... 4th year letter winners......very rare......even at a small school......i only had one....gave him a huge plaque......
i also allowed the coaches to have 1 "special" letter to give each year if they wanted to......for that person that was great on scout teams.....never missed a practice but didn't play.....those types....
i do agree that they deserve a letter more than tennis......but i don't think we can give every scouter a letter either.....
oh and knight......you must not be as impressed with cross county as i am.....our guys run about 5 miles a day.....i'm glad it's not me.....

Football is the only sport where you have to work so hard just to sit on the bench.
Of course every kid - "scouter" or otherwise - who finishes the season in good standing deserves a letter!

Run five miles, big deal, kid weighs 111# soaking wet. He should b able to run 5 miles, no one is going to tackle him. Most of those sports you are going to start if you show up. Not so in football. Back before they gave letters for Band and other non athletic extracurriculars I would agree that a letter meant something. Not any more. It is certainly not fair for a band member to have a Varsity letter or a Freshman that play soccer so they have 11 to field a team and not the kid that has busted his Ass on the football field since August!

Let's keep this about football. There's no reason to make this a forum to disparage other sports and activities.

why not? good question....almost said 'cause that's the way it's always been....
i guess my judgement of a letter is based on game playing time.......i don't think varsity sports should be treated like little league where everybody gets a trophy.....
awards, letters, plaques......however you recognize your "better" athletes should be considered something special......
of course the scouters works their butts off.........so does the manager that carries the coolers.....and the other manager that helps with the laundry.........some of the good managers can put in as many hours as the coaches sometimes.....they get letters too? i wouldn't letter 'em, but i'd find 'em extra t-shirts and hats......
i agree that scouters should be recognized.....i just don't think i'd give them all a letter...

If we had a manager that put in as many hours as a player (let alone a coach) I would want to give them a letter... and make sure that they got a coaches gift twice the size of any of the actual coaches gifts. That said I like the way we do it. We give them to anyone who has made a "significant contribution to the team on the varsity game when the score is close." Last year all of our Juniors started for us with two exceptions and they were our varsity return man and our #2 WR who probably played 40% of the snaps (we rarely threw to him). #2 WR came our as a junior and earned his letter more in scout team by never missing a single scout snap all year long on both offense and defense. Both are letter winners in other sports (Baseball / Basketball & Golf respectively). Both had lettermen's jackets prior to getting their letter in football. Neither put it on until after they got their football pin. Three sophomores earned letters. Our long snapper plus our only two Sophomore starters. People who didn't earn letters: #2 QB #3 WR, #3 RB, #3 Guard, #3 Tackle, #2 TE, etc. It is possible that only 3-5 people will earn their varsity letter this year. Everyone gets a JV letter. JV letters are smaller (other schools near by use plush letters for varsity and skinny ones for JV or reversed colors). The kids don't put their JV letters on their jackets but they wear their lettermen's jackets before they earn a letter it will just say Football on the back. Every year you letter you get another pin. Since the HC took over the program five years ago or whatever every senior has earned a letter.

Our guys have to play 20 quarters which can be special teams. One play equals one quarter. If not then those guys are going down to jv games and they earn a jv letter.

I am not diparaging anyone, just call it like I see it! Calling it "like you see it" doesn't mean you aren't disparaging anyone. Reminds me of Ricky Bobby thinking that the phrase "with all due respect" allows him to speak freely. As to the original question, you need to figure out what the letter means before you can decide who gets it.

If they play varsity they get a letter...
Even if we move a sophomore up from JV for the last few games we still give that kid his letter because we feel he made a contribution to our team. I think if the kid is on varsity, even if he just rides the bench all year, they deserve their letter

I'll put it this way:
Put yourself in the shoes of some defensive lineman. You're undersized and relatively athletic. Maybe you have some natural strength to keep you from getting killed, but you can't run. You huff and puff through conditioning, even though you busted your {censored} in the off-season, you just aren't an athlete. You get abused by the starters during Indy's because they're bigger and faster. You play every snap of scout defense, where you get doubled by starting offensive lineman. Oh, you can play scout Offense as well where will again play every snap, get physically abused and you'll get yelled at for "not giving a look". Come gamenight you're hoping for a late touchdown so you finally get in the game.
If it wasn't for kids like that I'd hang up my whistle.
