I've got a sophomore DE/OLB that pretty much every on the staff agrees could be scary good. He's 6'4, 195 lbs with a frame that would support 255 no problem, has a fantastic first step and plays with good natural leverage and is so long that he creates fantastic separation for himself. He's got a pretty good work ethic and I think with encouragement could really become a weight room warrior. To get to the point, his overall coordination needs a bit of development and I'm curious about how to approach it. He's by no means clumsy, but really struggles on physical multi-tasking i.e. catching or swatting down a pass while dropping to the flat. Will increased coordination just follow as he gets older or can we do anything to 'build' his athleticism? My understanding has always been that more active = more athletic on a general level, but should we try to steer him in specific directions and/or specific lifts/workout types? I really want to have a plan for this kid's development, both for his confidence and also so that we are doing what we can to maximize a guy that could be pretty special. Any help is appreciated If this is the wrong section, delete and I'll repost in the weights/speed area, I just wasn't sure where this fell under.

Part of it is a maturity thing - he needs to just grow. At that age, just walking down the hall result in a calamity! However, basic abilities will help with neuro-muscular coodination, and anything that encourages balance with stimulate the Propriocentor system, or the balance system. One the clumsiest players I had actually improved by skateboarding.
If he is an athlete, he may get that by participating in a variety of sports.

Sounds like he could help the basketball team and basketball could really help him too.
