Hi guys so I have a problem it is a good one but also one I am un sure of how to deal with!
I have 3 good qb's, 2 are seniors on our junior team and will move onto our senior team next year the last one is a 1st year junior that is as good as the 2 seniors. We are an Gun option team.
QB 1) senior, better athlete than the other 2 runs the option and zone read very well can't throw as well as the other 2
QB 2) senior, average athlete great arm more of a pocket style passer not keen on running with the ball
QB 3) junior, 2 out of 3 in terms of ability to run the option, zone read, very coachable, makes the best reads, and is almost as good of a passer as QB3
What do I do?
QB 1 has worked hard and runs the offence very well struggles in the passing game our senior HC wants to turn him into a DB next year
QB 2 runs the offence poorly and throws the ball into jepoardy to often
QB 3 lack of expereince, understands the offence can run it well, and is the best over all of the 3, has tremendous upside as he is back for 1 more year
None of them have outright won the starters job, we have 3 days left of practice and an exhibition game on Saturday. I want to find a starter what would you suggest?

touchdownmaker,
that is a GREAT question! The encapsulates the entire decision into one package - well done.
For what its worth, I would get the "race down" to 2 QBs before Saturday and announce your starter after that game. If you try to move 3 guys through an evaluative scrimmage, you won't get enough reps to see what you want to see out of them,
but, I am with kyle on this one, I think you have already answered your own question - #3

Who do the kids trust? Who does the staff trust?
I would grade them everyday of camp and give them equal reps and let the kids battle it out.
Give each of them the same number of R/P plays. Grade everyday and post the results and there should be great competition and whomever wins is the best.

Based on your statements and evaluations, its sounds like the sound choice is #3. I think your bigger problem is deciding who is the backup QB.
Do you go with #1 who sounds to be the next choice except he may end up as a DB. Which means less time working on his passing game.
Or #2. You will have more time to coach him up because he's not going both ways but he also needs the most work.

Yeah not sure how the guy who is "best overall" with "tremendous upside" could get beat by the guy who "runs the offense poorly and throws the ball into jeopardy too often."
Darin's advice is good. Eliminate #2, let #1 and #3 fight some more at the scrimmage, and then announce after that.

tye has a good point on practice time. Do you worry about losing #1 for other positions on offense if he is the backup? Or with QB practice time?
Sounds like he's not that good of a passer anyway so might move him to slot and let him split time at QB. Wouldn't have a robust passing game with him anyway, in the event that #3 got hurt.

Guys awesome responses!
So I trust QB #1, he does something I see rarely at this level takes responsibility for his mistakes, he will even go so far as to take the heat for his teammates. He got sacked last night and said to the coaches and the hudl "that is me I can't hold it that long" even though our OL messed up the pass pro. QB#2 same situation later in the scrimmage and looked back at me and said "what am I suposed to do when they don't block" (I pulled him from the scrimmage after that and say him, he is a good kid but very frustrated right now).
I agree on getting it down to 2 QB's for Saturday thank you for your thoughts.

If you cant find talent differences, choose the best character kid/most coachable kid and go from there. Youll waste a whole lot less energy and effort and have much less drama and it will allow you to coach your other kids.

How about this as well. If these guys are close...have two compete and make the other help your team at another position. Maybe all three are starters....?
