I agree with you guys that a football player has to have more than just straightline speed, but here is how I see it. If this guy is the fastest straight line runner we have ever seen he could probably be a trained to get off the jam and then what........... you have to have a guy over the top, and you have to have a guy jam him every play. If you give an NFL coach those two pieces of info I am sure they could do some nice things with it.

Why would he want to play in the NFL?
He is making millions per year right now in appearance fees, prizes, and endorsements. He is only 23, his prime for track and field performance is somewhere between 4-6 years from now. His risk of losing that future due to injury is relatively low (compared to football). He has the support of his entire nation.
It would obviously take a lot of work for him to be a decent football player, having no experience obviously would hold him back more than a little bit.
I don't know if y'all remember Dwain Chambers' attempt at NFL Europe during his steroids suspension. It went...poorly.
Just as no NFL player could reasonably be expected to compete with Bolt, Gay, etc. in international meets (Holliday and Demps could certainly make money on the tour, but they are not elite) no current track star could really step in and contribute meaningful.
Maybe many years of work, however. Bolt does have raw tools that are relatively unheard of. He is nearly half a second faster than Holliday in the 100! And Holliday is the fastest football player!
What about decathletes? Bryan Clay or WC winner Trey Hardee probably have a lot of potential.

I dunno, but he just broke the World record in the 200m yesterday too. Exactly...he could be considered one of, if not THE most DOMINANT athlete at his events (short sprints) in history. Seems rather silly to speculate on his leaving that to be a sideshow as an NFL player.

For all the reasons you mentioned it would be a stupid thing for him to do, but you can't help but wonder what if....... Kind of like what if Lebron was playing for the browns could he play? Obviously he isn't switching careers just a topic to discuss.

Good point the what ifs are fun
but I know some football fans who really do presume that american football is the only sport anyone would want to play...have to be vigilant sometimes

They said his top speed is 30 MPH . . . that is simply amazing!
What kind of head start does Bolt need against a horse?
