Ok guys got my first big pregame speech as headcoach coming up for my freshmen. I'm looking for ideas.
I'm thinking of using something I learned from Darin Slack that the high school career is 4 hours long as the center piece. Stand up, grab it, savor every second of it, never waste any of it etc.
I know we got some far more experienced head coaches than I. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Be yourself. If you are a firery guy that go with your heart. If not keep it short and sweet and get after it on the field. I have seen a lot of speechs back fire when something was planned too much.

15 year old kids don't need a speech... Something short to remind them to play hard and have fun.

Kids that young don't listen to speeches. Keep it short and sweet and utilize words or phrases they can relate to and take with them into the game. Best of luck coach.

I agree...short and sweet! Those kids could care less about a pregame speech. Unless you have something that is mind blowing (in which case they probably will not understand it) just tell them to play hard and get after it!

Keep is short and to the point. Don't plan it out. Say what needs to be said for the moment, based on how the team is doing. I remember my first game as a head coach adn the "speech" during pregame. Best one I ever gave. Maybe I set the bar too high. : )

KISS principle - they need to get ready to play.

have a "theme" for each week... each day have a specific quote that promotes that theme. 90 seconds at end of each practice relating the quote to the theme to the team... friday's pre-game is a 2-minute 'reminder' of the theme and what is needed from team
example of a theme: focus have quotes for each day of week about focus throughout the week the 90 talk is about how each player must focus on his assignment, his execution, etc. not to lose sight of the little things and get caught up in big moment... etc. pre-game pull it toward "if we focus we win", etc.

How about "try not to suck."

Best thing to say at that level is "Play Hard". Even if you don't know exactly what to do, go hard. Full speed on every play.

I'm trying to reflect back when I was 15 years old (30 years ago)...I think I liked my intense freshmen coach who tried to pump us full of enthusiasm. We went ape sh!t with excitement! If you are a fiery guy, go for it. If not, kids will see right through yo and not respond.
