Ok here is the deal. I'm the head coach of the freshman. This week our opponent didn't have a freshman team so the decision was made late in the week to have all freshman who were eligible dress out with the JV. This really didn't bother me because I expected my freshmen to be sitting on the bench. And win or loose they wouldn't consider it on them.
Well the game roles around and the JV is playing poorly. Towards the end of the 1st half they are down and I'm noticing more of my guys on the field. By the second half basically my entire defense is on the field.
When they got out there, defensively they pummeled the other team. Shut them down cold, and brought the pain which is what I teach. My motto is never try and injure but you want that guy calling in sick on Friday(day after freshman games). I was so proud. But while the offense did start moving with ball and did score it wasn't enough and they lost 6-18.
Now here is where I stand. I was expecting them to sit on the sidelines and watch the JV play. With at most a few of my best players getting a few reps in. Instead they all played a lot and lost. I don't want them to put this loss on themselves because I know {censored} well from what I saw on the field that with 4 quarters and our full team my freshman would have won that game.
So now I got to give the little speech tomorrow. And make them ignore the loss and focus on how well they played. And I got to do it without ripping on the JV, thank you phantom. So I got my own ideas but I wanted to bounce it off of you guys.

How are you going to do that without ripping the JV kids? Tell me something I dont know. Part of the problem is I got to get them ignore the loss and focus on how well they played without ripping on the JV.

You don't have to assign blame for the loss, so don't even mention the JV guys. Just let them know how happy you are with the way they played, especially against older players.

Coaches are always the ones to blame for losing a game... explain that to them, show film of the positives, and get ready for next week... its not a big deal.

Well I explained to them how happy and proud I was of them and how they brought it with a sack of nuts to a JV team all without mentioning our JV at all. Then one raised his hand. I asked him what he had to say and he blamed the JV. And I'm like damn, I cant win!!!!

The best things ever said at a speech for my teams:
" you all have a job to do, DO YOUR OWN JOB, trust your teammate to do his"
because honestly, doesnt matter the age group, seeing a kid trying to do someone elses job ticks me off.

Not to be John Wayne here, but I would be one to opine that speeches mean jack squat. Only thing that needs t be said is, "its time to play/compete". All a speech will do is throw words at kids with the hope of hyping them up (which can fizzle just as fast) on an artificially manufactured passion.
The Darin Slack example is one that is used to put the suffering into perspective for camp and the position. If we are doing our job as coaches through the week, we are instilling this attitude as a way of life.
A speech will spike confidence levels temporarily, but it is execution and assuredness in the assignment / game plan that actually gets kids to a point of swagger

Right - Think of the objective you're trying to obtain with the speech (Get the kids fired up to play) and then think of a better way to do this.
Intense, well planned, high rep, fast paced practices will do a better job meeting the objective then the next Lombardi speech.
