While I know Lou Holtz will not be running for Congress according to the latest interviews, it did get me thinking how many famous college football and pro football players have gone on to serve in government.
Tom Osborne, Steve Largent, JC Watts, and Heath Shuler were/are congressmen.
Alan Page is a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice.
Jack Kemp was in the US Sentate.
BTW could you imagine Holtz in Congress? I think he would be great.

If Lou Holtz ran for office I would move to that state so I could vote for him.

Wasn't Mike Ditka going to run for the Senate before Barack Obama won that seat?
PS - does George Allen's son count?
PSS - getting old is weird. Lou Holtz was midget-Jesus incarnate in the late 80's....but after seeing him and Mark May on ESPN for the past few seasons, I'm more resigned to seeing his Sylvester the Cat self fed through a woodchipper.

Holtz is just playing the part they ask him to play. Remember in "ESPN", "Sports" is the second word, "Entertainment" is the first. Like them or hate them, they got a schtick, and an audience that watches it. It's all about the Benjamin's not football.

Just musing over the topic here. Is there supposed to be some connection with sociopathic, meglomaniac/egomaniacle, cult-of-personality quality with/surrounding these men?
My point is, is there some psychological quirk that makes theses coaches (apparent in most coaches?) aspire to take a grand stage for change/etc? I'm sure how constituents view these figures is another subject altogether....
PSS- does Bill McCartney's role in PK count as being a politician?

If people knew the truth about lou holtz their stomach would turn or at least what he did to the university of minnesota football program.

I have always wondered how/why Holtz gets a pass on his past...Notre Dame is a powerful place I suppose.
